Gian Maria Vian, editor of L’Osservatore Romano, commented to the Register about the controversy (detailed here) surrounding the paper’s coverage of President Obama.

Is L’Osservatore Romano in agreement with those bishops of the United States who were opposed to Obama being honored by the University of Notre Dame?

L’Osservatore Romano always stands by different episcopates, and on this... READ MORE

“It is true we don’t share many views with the present administration on bioethical issues, but at the same time the traditional policy of the Holy See is to try to always have open channels, to follow a policy of dialogue through which you can tell people you don’t agree on certain issues, but at the same time keep on with a dialogue.”

Reuters reported today that the Vatican newspaper, L’Osservatore Romano, has published two editorials prompted by the film’s premiere in Rome on Monday.

According to Reuters, “The editorials neither panned nor praised the film but rather offered up a mix of positive and... READ MORE

Jack Smith at The Catholic Key blog has provided a useful assessment of yesterday’s surprising analysis in the Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano about President Barack Obama.

The article seemed to suggest that Obama’s record to date as president on human life issues is considerably better than the U.S. bishops and American pro-lifers have concluded.

Remembering Eluana. (CNS/Reuters)

The Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano has released an editorial about the death of Eluana Englaro.

Eluana died yesterday after being deprived of the feeding tube the comatose woman required in order to receive food and water.

Her death has sparked an outcry in Italy and around the world against this so-called act of “euthanasia” of a patient who is in a long-term coma.

Here is the text... READ MORE

L’Osservatore Romano has taken a tolerant view of John Lennon’s famous quip that the Beatles were more popular than Jesus.

Just some mind games from a musical young Brit who had made it big, the Vatican newspaper commented in a retrospective about the Beatles published on Saturday.

In a 1966 interview, Lennon said, “Christianity will go. We’re more popular than Jesus now. I don’t know... READ MORE
