Embassy: No Seizure of Funds

Reports that Israel’s Chief Tax Collector had seized the funds of Catholic Church institutions in Israel in order to force them to submit to fiscal demands have been denied today by Israel’s embassy to the Holy See.
According to an earlier AsiaNews report, Yehezkel Abrahamoff of Israel’s Finance Ministry had ordered the seizure to force the Church to pay taxes without waiting the outcome... READ MORE

Israel’s Chief Tax Collector has seized the funds of Catholic Church institutions in Israel in order to force them to submit to fiscal demands which he considers appropriate.

Franciscan Father Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Custos of the Holy Land, has predicted Israel and the Holy See will resolve differences on implementing their 1993 Fundamental Agreement by the end of this year.
Father Pizzaballa made the comments in a May 20 interview with Terrasanta.net in which he discusses Pope Benedict XVI’s May 8-15 visit to the Holy Land.

Israeli news media are reporting a split within the Israeli government about handing sovereignty over Christian holy sites to the Catholic Church.
According to the reports, Israeli President Shimon Peres favors ceding sovereignty of six holy sites, including the Church of the Annunciation in Nazareth and Gethsemane on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, to the Church.
