In a powerful speech delivered this weekend in Krakow, Poland, at an ecumenical meeting sponsored by Sant’Egidio in commemoration of the Holocaust, Rabbi Israel Meir Lau opened by recalling comments made to him by Pope John Paul II in 1993.

According to CatholicCulture.org, the Aug. 14 issue of the Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano contains an article by Raffaele Alessandri that is strongly critical of the failure of the U.S. State Department to take actions to help Jews after it learned of the Holocaust in 1942.

Last week New York City honored a Polish Catholic hero for his efforts to save Jews from the Holocaust.
Like Oskar Schindler and Irena Sendler, Jan Karski was a Catholic who risked his life in the cause of saving Jewish lives.

On Sunday, CBS is airing Hallmark Hall of Fame’s The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler. While not a household name, she should be as well known as Schindler. Sendler was a Polish Catholic credited with saving the lives of 2,500 Jewish children during World War II.

More confirmation that Pope Pius XII sought to save Jews from the Holocaust has been disclosed.
Catholic News Service reports today that a document has been found in a Rome convent confirming Pius XII instructed Church institution to harbor Jews fleeing arrest by Nazi authorities.
Jesuit Father Peter Gumpel, the relator of Pius XII’s sainthood cause, found the document, CNS reported.
