Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi, the Vatican’s chief spokesman, has acknowledged that improvements are required in how the Vatican publicizes its actions.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s very public criticism of Pope Benedict XVI’s decision to lift the excommunication of Bishop Richard Williamson took the Vatican by surprise.

Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican’s Secretary of State, has commented about Pope Benedict XVI’s lifting of the excommunications of four Society of St. Pius X bishops.

Bishop Bernard Fellay, superior general of the Society of St. Pius X, has apologized to Pope Benedict XVI for the controversial Holocaust-denying remarks of another SSPX bishop.
