BBC News has posted a slideshow here of Pope Benedict XVI’s visit today to Italy’s earthquake-damaged Abruzzo region.
An April 6 earthquake there killed nearly 300 people and caused massive damage throughout the region.

The Vatican has announced Pope Benedict XVI will visit the Italy’s earthquake-battered Abruzzo region April 28.
By his presence, the Pope will manifest the Church’s solidarity with the Italian families and communities that have suffered death, injury and the loss of homes and jobs due to the April 6 earthquake.

One of the Italy’s most famous basilicas, Santa Maria di Collemaggio, was very badly damaged in yesterday’s earthquake in Italy.

Abbess Dies in Quake

The Adnkronos news agency has reported that Sister Gemma Antonucci, abbess of the Poor Clare nuns of the convent of Santa Chiara of Paganica, died in today’s earthquake in Italy.
According to the Adnkronos report, rescuers were trying to remove debris from another nun thought to be trapped in the collapsed building.
