As the Daily Blog noted in our previous post, Oct. 1 is the feast day of St. Thérèse of Lisieux. But this day is also fraught with a secular significance: It’s the 60th anniversary of the Communist seizure of power in China.

On Monday, Chinese police arrested Bishop Julius Jia Zhiguo, the underground bishop of Zhengding in the Chinese province of Hebei.
The arrest was timed to coincide with Monday’s convening at the Vatican of the Catholic Church’s Plenary Commission on the Church in China.

The Vatican’s Commission for the Catholic Church in China is currently holding its second plenary session.
The meeting in Rome runs from today through Wednesday.

Cardinal Joseph Zen Ze-kiun has announced he will retire as Hong Kong’s bishop in April, but he won’t be ending his active service on behalf of the Church.

The Chinese government won’t allow Catholic bishops to come to this month’s World Synod of Bishops.
Vatican spokesman Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi said today that China has indicated that travel requests for the bishops have been rejected, Reuters reported.
However, bishops from Hong Kong and Macao will be allowed to attend the synod, which begins Sunday.
