President Barack Obama said yesterday at a White House press conference that passage of the Freedom of Choice Act “is not my highest legislative priority.”
This is welcome news and testimony to the success of the U.S. bishops in mobilizing Catholics and other Americans to oppose the abortion lobby’s draconian FOCA legislation.

The Notre Dame scandal shows no signs of stopping.
Two more bishops — Bishop Richard Stika of Knoxville, Tenn., and Bishop Gerald Barbarito of Palm Beach, Fla., — came out with statements opposing the University of Notre Dame’s invitation to President Barack Obama to speak at the school’s May 17 commencement exercises and receive an honorary degree of law. On the day Cardinal George and the Catholic bishops started their push for conscience rights, Cardinal Francis George met with President Obama.
In his earlier video statement, Cardinal George uses strong language about Obama’s opposition to conscientious objector rights for health-care workers, saying it “could be the first step in moving our country from democracy to despotism.”

Cardinal Francis George, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, has denounced remarks denying the Holocaust by Bishop Richard Williamson of the Priestly Society of St. Pius X.
Speaking on behalf of the U.S. bishops, Cardinal George called Bishop Williamson’s comments “deeply offensive and utterly false.”
