An official announcement of a historic papal state visit to Britain is now not expected until toward the end of this year, the Register has learned.

The Times of London reported today:
Pope Benedict XVI is to visit Britain next year in the first ever official visit by a pontiff.
The Holy See will announce soon the first papal visit to Britain since Pope John Paul II made a pastoral visit in 1982.

Critics have charged that Sarah Palin and others were wildly over the top, in warning that President Barack Obama’s health-care reform initiative could open the door to federally funded “death panels” that would order the euthanizing of seriously ill patients.

Could G.K. Chesterton be declared a Saint?
If a group of Chesterton scholars meeting at Oxford next month has their way, the British journalist and convert G.K. Chesterton’s Cause could be taken up by the Church.
According to a story that originally appeared in the UK Catholic Herald, Chesterton biographer William Oddie will bring the subject up at the conference on July 4th.

Archbishop Vincent Nichols
Archbishop Vincent Nichols has been appointed as the new Archbishop of Westminster by Pope Benedict XVI.
Archbishop Nichols, who was serving as archbishop of Birmingham until his new appointment today, will succeed retiring Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor.

A Catholic British Royal Family?

The U.K.’s Guardian newspaper has reported that British Prime Minister Gordon Brown is committed to ending the country’s current royal ban on Catholics.
Brown said today he will address the “anomaly,” first enshrined in the 1701 Act of Settlement, that legally banned Catholics from marrying into the British royal family.

The Times of London reported today that Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor of Westminster will be offered a seat in Britain’s House of Lords.
If that should come to pass, Cardinal Murphy-O’Connor would become the first Catholic bishop to sit in Britain’s upper house of Parliament since the Reformation.
