According to Andrea Tornielli, Vatican correspondent for Il Giornale, a meeting of theologian consultors was held yesterday morning at the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. It was the second such meeting to examine the “positio ” — documents on the testimony of the cause.

A papal decree announcing the beatification of Cardinal John Henry Newman is imminent and will most likely be made before the Vatican closes for its summer break in August, the Register has learned.

Joaquin Navarro-Valls has said Pope Benedict XVI could announce the beatification of Pope John Paul II as early as this year.
In an interview today with the Italian newspaper, Il Sole 24 Ore, John Paul II’s former press spokesman added to recent comments from Vatican officials who have said recent events won’t prevent the cause from going forward.

A meeting of theological consulters was held at the Vatican May 13 to decide on the process of the beatification of John Paul II.
