Archbishop Michael Miller (CNS)
No, that’s not a bizarre travel itinerary.
It’s the route taken by Archbishop Michael Miller, the new archbishop of Vancouver, in his priestly career.
Archbishop Miller became archbishop of Vancouver following the Jan. 2 resignation of Archbishop Raymond Roussin. Archbishop Roussin, who was treated for clinical depression in 2005, resigned for reasons of health.
Archbishop Miller was appointed coadjutor archbishop of Vancouver by Pope Benedict XVI in June 2007. As coadjutor, he automatically succeeded to the leadership of the archdiocese after Archbishop Roussin’s resignation was accepted by the Pope.
Before coming to Vancouver, the Ottawa-born Archbishop Miller served from 2003-2005 as secretary of the Vatican’s Congregation of Catholic Education.
Along with his Vatican experience, Archbishop Miller has strong ties to the United States. He taught theology at the University of Houston from 1979 to 1990 before becoming the university’s vice-president of academics affairs.
From 1992-1997, he served in the English-language section of the Vatican’s Secretariat of State before returning to the University of Houston. At the time he was appointed as secretary of the Congregation for Catholic Education, he was serving as the university’s president.
