Georgia On Our Minds

Georgia Sen. Saxby Chambliss (UPI)

Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel certified Georgia’s election results this afternoon, thereby officially triggering a Dec. 2 runoff election for the U.S. Senate.

Incumbent Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss fell just short of the 50% margin required to avoid a runoff with Democratic candidate Jim Martin.

This analysis at Newsmax.com highlights the potentially huge significance of the run-off election. A victory could give Senate Democrats, who now hold 57 seats with two other races in Minnesota and Alaska still undecided, a chance of obtaining the 60-seat “supermajority” that would make it impossible for Senate Republicans to filibuster any legislation they oppose strongly.

It’s a race with huge implications for pro-lifers too. With the pro-abortion-rights Dems already in firm control of the House and with pro-abortion President-elect Barack Obama poised to sign the abortion lobby’s Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) legislation whenever Congress passes it, the importance of the Georgia Senate race is clear from the perspective of protecting human life.

Memo to Catholics and other pro-lifers in Georgia: Take note and get out to vote!
