National Review Online has reported that Father Richard John Neuhaus, editor in chief of First Things, is near death.

Father George Rutler administered last rites to Father Neuhaus shortly before midnight. Father Rutler told NRO’s Kathryn Jean Lopez that “he is not expected to live long” and suggested “that it is appropriate that prayers be offered for a holy death.”

Since last week, Father Neuhaus has been receiving treatment in a New York hospital for an infection related to a cancer that he developed over Thanksgiving.

Our prayers at the National Catholic Register are joined with those of millions of other Catholic Americans, and those of countless others around the world, for Father Neuhaus.
