The Register and Me

BY Tom Hoopes
Commentary
August 9-22, 2009 Issue

I have been writing for the Register for 20 years — and hope to make it 30 or 40 before I’m done. I will continue to write for the Register. Not, however, as its executive editor.

I have been offered, and have accepted, a position at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kan. I will be the director of strategic... READ MORE

Benedict on Health Care
National Catholic Register Editorial
August 9-22, 2009 Issue

The health-care debate is a perfect example of why Pope Benedict XVI’s encyclical on the economy is called Caritas in Veritate — Charity and Truth.

Think of it this way: Psychologists who have attempted to care for people’s mental health without regard to the reality of sin end up leaving people at the... READ MORE

Pope Benedict XVI fell because he couldn’t find a light switch in his vacation room, Associated Press is reporting.

He didn’t cry for help, and he wanted to say Mass the next day. But handlers insisted he go to the hospital, says the report, citing Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi.

The incident happened at the mountain house in Les Combes, near the French border.

Previously, the... READ MORE

Heading West

I have happy news — that’s also sad news.

I have been offered, and have accepted, a position at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kan. My last day at the Register (as an editor) will be Aug. 7.

This is difficult because leaving the National Catholic Register and Faith & Family magazine feels like leaving family. I have written for the Register for 20 years. My first paycheck as a published... READ MORE

Popes Wilt Doubts

Frank McCourt in New York. wiki

A WSJ article about one failure of the Church in Ireland ended up becoming an article about the power of the Church — and of Peter.

This time, it’s Angela’s Ashes author Frank McCourt. After becoming disenchanted with (and antagonistic to) Catholicism, “Mr. McCourt felt it was impossible to fully divorce himself from the Church.”

In July 24’s “The Faith of Frank McCourt” Peter Duffy... READ MORE

40 Years and 1 Day Ago

We didn’t get this up yesterday but, heck, history’s impact can’t be pinned down to dates, right?

By the way, yesterday was the 40th anniversary of my baptism, too. God created us to look beyond this earth.

Obama: Divide and Conquer?

Posted by Tom Hoopes

Sunday, July 19, 2009 5:33 AM

Does Obama have a conscious “divide and conquer” strategy with Catholics?

University of Alabama political scientist professor Michael New thinks so (in our news story on Dr. Benjamin).

Appointing pro-abortion Catholics “has the political advantages of showing that 1) there is disagreement among Catholics about sanctity-of-life issues and that 2) Catholics who support legal abortion can be... READ MORE

Jackson in Light of Benedict

I’m back from a long vacation and an evil virus ... Here’s an easy post: This week’s editorial.

To Resist the Thriller
July 26-August 8, 2009 Editorial

Two events captured the attention of a worldwide audience on July 7. One was the publication of Caritas in Veritate, Pope Benedict XVI’s Augustinian encyclical on economics. The other was the memorial of Michael Jackson, marking a life that... READ MORE

Fr. Joseph Fitzgerald's ordination. cns/G.A. Shemitz, LI Catholic

More resources for the Year for Priests ... our January 2008 editorial gives these reasons to be a priest:

The seven sacraments are the original, and best, seven reasons to be a priest. But here are seven that incorporate recent news headlines about the priesthood.

First: The World Needs Heroes

That’s the title of NYPriest.com’s new movie ad, and it makes the essential point. God has shown... READ MORE
