BBC News has posted a slideshow here of Pope Benedict XVI’s visit today to Italy’s earthquake-damaged Abruzzo region.

An April 6 earthquake there killed nearly 300 people and caused massive damage throughout the region.

Speaking at a tent town where some residents of the community of Onna are now living, the Pope “read a haunting prayer asking God to hear the palpable cry of pain in the area,” Reuters reported.

Prayed the Holy Father, “It is the silent cry of the blood of mothers, fathers, little innocent children that rises up from this earth.”
