Our current Rome correspondent Edward Pentin broke the news Wednesday that Pope John Paul II reportedly is in line to beatified April 2, 2010, on the fifth anniversary of his death.

Our former Rome correspondent Father Raymond J. de Souza has spotted a big problem with this date: Good Friday falls on that day next year.

Given this conflict with the liturgical calendar, Father de Souza suggests that if the Polish media reports are true and John Paul is indeed on the fast track to beatification next year, the ceremony might take place instead on the liturgical anniversary of the late Pope’s death: Divine Mercy Sunday, April 11, 2010.
