Archbishop Allan Vigneron (CNS)

Vatican Information Services reported today that Pope Benedict XVI has accepted the resignation of Cardinal Adam Maida of Detroit.

The Pope has appointed Archbishop Allan Vigneron of Oakland, Calif., as the new archbishop of Detroit.

Cardinal Maida, who is 78, has served as archbishop of Detroit since 1990. He was elevated to cardinal in 1994.

Archbishop Vigneron was appointed to lead the Diocese of Oakland in 2003. he was ordained as a priest of the archdiocese of Detroit in 1975 and was ordained as an auxiliary bishop in 1996. He also served as rector of Sacred Heart Major Seminary from 1994-2003.

Update: The Michigan Catholic, the newspaper of the Archdiocese of Detroit, has posted a new interview here with Archbishop Vigneron. And a transcript of remarks by Archbishop Vigneron at a press conference today at Sacred Heart Major Seminary can be viewed here at the Whispers in the Loggia website.
