Mass Translations Approved

(CNS)

The U.S. bishops have voted to approve a new English translation of some of the prayers used in the Mass.

The bishops voted 189-30 today at their fall meeting in Baltimore in favor of a translation of the Proper of the Seasons, the proper prayers for Sundays and feast days throughout the liturgical year.

As this CNS article notes, it’s only one more step on the road to securing final Church approval for a new English translation of the Roman Missal — one that’s intended to be more faithful to the meaning of the original Latin prayers in the Mass.

But with the remaining sections of the translations of the third edition of the Roman Missal by the International Commission on English in the Liturgy slated to come before the U.S. bishops for votes in 2009 and 2010, the finish line is now in sight.
