Archbishop Chaput Speaks Out

Share

Posted by Tom McFeely

Tuesday, November 04, 2008 3:04 PM

This is the first part of a recent interview with Archbishop Charles Chaput of Denver, speaking about issues related to faith and politics.

The interview was conducted by Thomas Peters, who operates the American Papist website.

As always, Archbishop Chaput gives thoughtful and concise explanations of the matters he discusses. And he corrects persistent misunderstandings about topics like the alleged division among the U.S. bishops about whether pro-abortion Catholic politicians should present themselves for Communion.

“I don’t think there’s any differences among the bishops about pro-choice Catholics presenting themselves for Communion,” Archbishop Chaput said. “They shouldn’t do it.”

Added Archbishop Chaput, “That’s not what the debate’s about among bishops. Because if you’re not in union with the Church on the serious issues of faith and morals you shouldn’t receive Communion, whether you’re a bishop or a private citizen, a simple Catholic or a politician who claims to be Catholic. The differences among the bishops is whether they should be refused Holy Communion if they present themselves anyway.”

Here’s the second part of the interview. Listen to it before you vote, if you haven’t yet gone to the polls. And if you have, listen anyway — it’s a great way to fill the gap until the election returns start flooding in later today.
