Paul Ryan, Catholic Who Looks to Church's Social Teaching, Tapped as Romney Running Mate (12777)

A budget-cruncher who cites Catholic social teaching as an inspiration for his own economic thinking has been tapped for the second slot on the GOP presidential ticket.

Mitt Romney, the presumptive Republican nominee, on Saturday named Rep. Paul Ryan, chairman of the House Budget Committee and a seven-term congressman from Wisconsin, as his running mate.

The eagerly anticipated announcement was made in Norfolk, Va., where Ryan, 42, was joined on stage by his wife, Janna, and their three small children.

With the choice of Ryan, an advocate of entitlement reform and shrinking the size of the federal government, Romney has ensured that the role of government and the future of Medicare will figure prominently in this year’s race for the White House.

While Ryan has attracted harsh criticism from some Catholics — questioning whether he can rightly lay claim to the mantle of Catholic social teaching — other Catholics regard Ryan as an excellent choice.

“I am thrilled with the selection of Ryan,” Catholic theologian Michael Novak said, “because it emphasizes family, character and a vision that is on the offense against President Obama and that sees Obama as destroying the country’s military and financial structure and pitting class against class.”

“As a smart, serious Catholic, Congressman Ryan has been steadfast on issues of fundamental principle — defending religious liberty, life and traditional marriage,” The Catholic Association said in a press release.

“In addition, he has been thoughtful and articulate in applying Catholic principles to the other challenges facing America,” the statement added.

The selection also drew immediate praise from pro-life leaders.

“Paul Ryan has been an eloquent defender of life, articulating his view that policy and principles can work together,” said Charmaine Yoest, president and CEO of Americans United for Life. “On the issue of defending life in particular, the use of the bully pulpit is crucial, and we look forward to hearing more from Congressman Ryan on the need to ensure that every person is welcomed in life and protected in law.”

“By selecting Congressman Ryan as his vice-presidential running mate, Governor Romney demonstrates his commitment to protecting American women and unborn children,” said Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List. “He has a pristine pro-life voting record and will be an asset to Governor Romney’s campaign.”

Still, Ryan is controversial in some Catholic circles. When he spoke at Georgetown University last spring, he was greeted by a statement from 60 Catholic theologians who charged that his budget plan was “morally indefensible and betrays Catholic principles of solidarity, just taxation and a commitment to the common good.”

A letter from nearly 90 faculty and administration officials at Georgetown informed Ryan that his budget plan “appears to reflect the values of your favorite philosopher, Ayn Rand, rather than the Gospel of Jesus Christ.”

And — if that wasn’t enough — a committee of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, led by Bishop Stephen Blaire of Stockton, Calif., sent a letter to Congress criticizing the Ryan budget.

Ryan replied in a brief statement that he shared their “commitment to a preferential option for the poor” — a key element of Catholic social teaching — but added that the option “does does not mean a preferential option for bigger government.”

Speaking at Georgetown, Ryan said that some Catholics “for a long time have thought they had a monopoly of sorts … not exactly on heaven, but on the social teaching of our Church. Of course there can be differences among faithful Catholics on this.”

Throwing Granny Off a Cliff?

Ryan went on to say that the “overarching threat to our whole society today is the exploding federal debt. The Holy Father, Pope Benedict, has charged that governments, communities and individuals running up high debt levels are ‘living at the expense of future generations’ and ‘living in untruth.’"

“We in this country still have a window of time before a debt-fueled economic crisis becomes inevitable. We can still take control before our own needy suffer the fate of Greece. How we do this is a question for prudential judgment, about which people of good will can differ,” Ryan said at Georgetown.

Entering the fray Saturday morning, Ryan said, “I’m proud to stand with a man who understands what it takes to foster job creation in our economy, someone who knows from experience that if you have a small business — you did build that.”

This was a reference to President Obama’s “If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that” speech in July in Roanoke, Va. The remark, which has haunted the president’s campaign, is widely interpreted as putting the role of government over that of the individual.

With regard to Medicare, Ryan would allow the current system, as an option, but would introduce market-based competition and a patient-centered voucher system. This led to Democratic political ads featuring a Ryan lookalike pushing a grandmother in a wheelchair over a cliff.

“The first thing to understand is that granny is going to be thrown off the cliff anyway, if we don’t make changes to Medicare,” said Joseph Antos, Wilson H. Taylor Scholar in Health Care and Retirement Policy at the American Enterprise Institute. Antos said that Ryan’s plan would modernize Medicare and make it more efficient.

Saying that “on fiscal matters, Paul Ryan has no peer,” Antos noted that Ryan gets to the root of problems. Antos said that, for example, “Ryan understands that sequester [across the board cuts] is a really terrible idea because it doesn’t take on the tough issues.”

“I like the Ryan choice very much,” said Paul Kengor, author and professor of political science at Grove City College. “Liberals are going to be attacking him as lacking in compassion, being a deficit hawk and hurting the poor. But, as Ronald Reagan would say, the best anti-poverty program is a growing economy. Paul Ryan wants to help the poor by growing the economy and with policies more in line with [the Catholic principle of] subsidiarity.”

“Everybody is going to be using the word ‘gravitas,’” Kengor continued, “and Paul Ryan has gravitas. They won’t Quayle him. They can’t make him look like a deer in the headlights. He will be able to answer the questions.”

Of course, this removes his vote from Congress, except if the Senate should need a tie broken…I wonder who will replace him?

Mr. Ryan has had the temerity to provide solutions for problems most DC insiders consider radioactive.  He’s a rare “doer” in a city of blowhard talkers.  His detractors have a lot to criticize, mainly because he’s established an actual record, not like Sen. Obama, who could be all things to all people because he had no record of any sort.  That fact has tragically changed this time around.

It will be interesting to see Catholic socialists line up behind Obama, with his stable of dissenting, cafeteria, and just plain heretical catholics: Pelosi, Sebellius, Biden etc.  The lines of conscience are clearly drawn, and your choice (and mine) will make a real difference.  These are consequential times, demanding courage and wisdom, not just sophomoric and sentimental theories hammered out by radical college professors in a 19th century beer house in Berlin.  These men have had far too much influence on American history already.

I am considering buying a Romney/Ryan bumper sticker and putting a red line through Romney. (Sort of like voodoo).

I’s funny how conservatives who are all about following the direction of their bishops seem to have no problem with the fact that Paul Ryan was publicly corrected because of his budget and it not standing up to traditional Catholic standards when it comes to Catholic social teaching. When Nancy Pelosi is corrected by her bishop and refuses to listen and to change her stance people call for her to be excommunicated. But not when the exact same thing happens to Paul Ryan. Why is that? Oh it’s because he’s against abortion so that’s why people are willing to look the other way. I find that very hypocritical. To be truly 100% pro-life is to be against more than just abortion. His budget plan is not 100% pro-life. But no one really seems to care. And I say all of this as someone who will definitely not be voting for Obama either. I’m not happy with either candidate.

Let’s be careful who we refer to as “Catholic” critics of Paul Ryan:

Remember Georgetown U. and Kathleen Sebelius? Consider the USCCB’s have-it-both-ways philosophy (Abp. Dolan’s Al Smith invite to Obama)? Sadly, too many of our bishops and universities are failing to be truly Catholic anymore, hiding behind a charade of reckless, big government “social justice teaching” to justify their existence. If these are Ryan’s critics, then I heartily commend him.

Pray for our church, as it is truly a divided institution. In the meantime, Paul Ryan is the answer to the prayers of pro-life, pro-traditional marriage and pro-religious freedom Catholics.

Aug. 12th: What an incredible choice!! Paul Ryan is a faithful Catholic who meets regularly with his spiritual director.  He is consistently pro life - now Cardinal Dolan has a real choice:  party with the most anti-life, anti-Church politician in modern times-Obama, or have the dignity and courage of Paul Ryan who will never compromise when it comes to the life of the unborn.  While Obama and Card. Dolan are partying at the Al Smith dinner and Obama is smiling for the photographers, babies continue to be slaughtered in the wombs of their mothers and Obama aggressively pushes his death agendas that will cause the death of millions more human babies.  And this is the man that Card. Dolan has invited to party with him!!??  Would Card. Dolan have invited Hitler to a party saying they need to put ‘politics’ aside for a party?  This is not about politics it is about killing on a massive scale…and you cannot put aside the cries of the unborn ...Pope Benedict refused to meet in public with Nancy Pelosi because he did not want to give her a photo-op which could seem as if he were endorsing her policies. Obama will use his party time with Card. Dolan to show wavering Catholics that they can vote for him because he is ‘cool’ with the Catholic Church…and then he will have 4 more years to complete his agenda of death and destruction…

But Paul Ryan is not a graduate of Harvard or Yale.

That is one criticism I have heard, though my response…“good!”

Bravo!, God willing, President to be Romney for a very fine selection; one that irks both political and Catholic socialists; those whom clearly cannot see the forest for the trees.

In a desperate clinging to failed liberal social and economic policies of the last 80 years, they remain steadfast willing to lose the country to save their vaunted programs - a predilection toward suicide one might think.  After all, how can these precious programs all be saved anyway if the nation ends up at best like a France or England and at worse a Greece or Venezuela.

If the Democrats and the people and bishops that oppose Paul Ryan are ticked off, others can rest comfortably knowing Mr. Romney did the right thing - win or lose.

Good reporting.

Thanks for the very informative piece.

Good morning Brethren: What a breath of fresh air is Paul Ryan. Let me say what my point is in regard to fresh air.  Nancy Pelosi states that her Catholic faith is behind her position on LGBT (and I might add also her stance for abortion which she is a starch supporter for), rights such as same sex marriage.” She goes on to say, “My religion compels me and I love it,’ Nancy Pelosi claims to be Roman Catholic and even goes to the communion rail to recieve the Sacrament of Communion, and with her belief of her having a clean heart even though she supports the abuse and killing of unborn babies and unclean living such as homosexuality. She gives a bad name to the Roman Catholic Church and more to the name of Jesus Christ because she has her own agenda and that is not the agenda of the Lord nor of the Roman Catholic Church. Yesterday, I pulled up on the computer Mr Ryans stance on abortion and, with his claim to be Roman Catholic, he demonstrates his true faith thru the advocacy against the killing of unborn babies. Moral decay, in our society, runs from the Capitol thru the branches of our government to the representatives of the people, under the premise we all have agreed upon from the beginning of the creation of this here nation, under God. Going back to my main point of my saying bravo to Mr Ryan for standing up for his beliefs in God, in the name of Jesus Christ, and for the Roman Catholic Church in word and in deed, is that if a man is faithful in the little things he will be faithful in much.  Jesus said, “You will know them (my disciples) by their fruits.” Ones such as Nancy Pelosi is missing the mark which is an individual issue, yet, as a verbal representative of the Roman Catholic Church she lies about the doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church.  I would vote for one such as Mr. Paul Ryan, not just that I believe he is the man for this hour in the history of our country, but first because he has demonstrated in the political arena truth in word and in deed. Therefore, I would trust his decision making as a financial watchdog for this here United States of America. It is true; If a man if faithful in the little things, such as Gods word, His Church, His truth, a man will be faithful in much which God will later on send his way for the good of the people and the salvation of a nations existence.

The liberal Catholic and anti-Catholic faculty at Georgetown hardly do a credible job of defining “Church”.

Although I am thrilled by the selection of Paul Ryan as VP candidate, I am less than amused (but not surprised) by Georgetown’s professional response. As a graduate of SFS 81, it does not surprise me. Even when there many questioned whether GU was Catholic or secular.

The problem with many academics at Catholic universities is that they seem to subscribe to Liberation Theology, a construct that impossibly blends Marx and Christ. This has been condemned by John Paul II and Benedict XVI. Unless we reform social security and entitlements, there will be no future for those who truly need them. And I for one am sick of liberals and so called progressives who try to imitate the bankrupt ideas of socialism which is failing in Europe as we speak.

Ryan offers a breathe of fresh air. Maybe his ideas will not work; maybe they will. But it is high time people in DC did something and tried something or we are lost.

Love that Romney chose Paul Ryan!!!!

Hope no one is too attached to their Medicare/Medicaid and is financially well prepared to pay for their health care, nursing home costs. At this rate Granny will be working until she drops dead thus decreasing the surplus population.

Mr. Ryan is cherry picking Catholic Social Teaching to suit his purposes knowing well that most people have not read it (and yes, I have read it, you should too) and therefore don’t know what it says.  If there were living wage jobs to be had, and everyone was skilled enough to do them, they would be employed.  Be careful what you wish for, no one has a guarantee of a lifetime job or the good health to perform one.

As Christians, we have a right and a duty to participate in society, seeking together the common good and well-being of all, especially the poor and vulnerable.

How are the poor and vulnerable better served? By a larger government that take part of our wages to server the poor and vulnerable OR by a Catholic organization run by volunteers (Like the Saint Paul Society)?

How the poor are best served is a topic that can be debated amoungst Christians in good faith.

J - are you serious? You equate some Bishops’ criticism of Paul Ryan’s budget to Pelosi’s radical anti life, anti Church agenda???  The Bishops themselves disagree about how to solve the economical problems we have and what kind of a budget to propose.  Paul Ryan listens to the Bishops’ advice - and the Bishops differ on that advice, but is not obliged morally to follow each and every differing opinion; Nancy Pelosi IS mandated to follow the law against the murder of preborn babies…and to equate Paul Ryan’s budget proposals with Pelosi’s anti-life, anti Church, anti Bishops agendas is absurd.  Pelosi has publicly stated that the Church and her Bishops are out of touch with modern times and that she, Pelosi, has the truth and the majority of Catholics on her side. So stop trying to put Ryan down…he is already being maliciously and viciously attacked by the left…

Aug. 13th:  The media and liberal Catholics have already begun a campaign to prove that Obama is on track with the Catholic Church, touting the fact that Cardinal Dolan himself invited Obama to come and speak at the dinner and party with him.  It all seems so unreal!! While some may disagree with Paul Ryan’s budget proposals, at least he is trying to fix the economy and he is a faithful and true Catholic for which he will be crucified so please pray for him. We will be seeing pictures of Obama and Cardinal Dolan in the press right before the election. Those Catholics who are now wavering will be encouraged by those images to vote for Obama.  We know that God can bring good out of evil but satan can bring evil even out of good intentions.  Surely Cardinal Dolan knows that he is being used and that the perception of him with Obama partying and laughing it up while preborn human babies are crying out from the womb where they are being slaughtered at the order of Obama will be scandalous. One cannot ‘put politics aside’ with a proponent of evil while the evil goes on even during the partying.  And Cardinal Dolan surely will not take Obama’s word not to use the event as a photo op…didn’t Cardinal Dolan take Obama’s word after their private meeting? And didn’t Obama mock the Cardinal by breaking his word??? Please Cardinal Dolan, at least postpone the party until after the election.

Good morning & I pray that God blesses each of you.

Maryanne, I must ask you a question: what would you recommend to ensure that there is a “safety net”? Financially we cannot afford to safeguard everyone & everything at the rate we currently do.  Everyone is going to suffer some so that we can bring our economy back from the brink of certain economic failure. I can see by your understanding of “Catholic social teaching” that we will have to “agree to disagree” and that is perfectly fine.
For myself and my family, we will support the Romney/Ryan ticket because I cannot vote for President Obama, he is in total opposition of “any” Catholic teachings and most reprehensible of all: Respect for Life…ALL life from conception to natural death. Which in my understanding includes the following: poor, disabled, underemployed, employed, families, marriage, people of faith, our men & women who lay their lives on the line, in other words, the dignity of ALL Human Life…you see for me and my understanding of faith, when we don’t do the first (love & respect the dignity of the Human person) we cannot do any of the rest.

I love my God, who loved me first and who continues to love me even when I fall short of the mark…therefore I am able (not always successfully) to love those around me and pray diligently for those who do not understand why we are in existence…to love & serve the Lord our God.

I think it’s a great choice but am not sure it will work in Florida. My son calls it “The state where America goes to die.”
:)
Old age makes some wiser, others more self centered.I hope the wiser ones support Paul Ryan.

Not voting IS voting. Waiting for a candidate who meets ALL our criteria is like waiting for a “perfect” church until we are willing to attend. As Americans, we have an opportunity to affect the course our country will be pursing. We can do that by voting, and by NOT voting. Failing to vote for even “the lesser of two evils” is VOTING for the “greater.”

Yeah, wow.  A Catholic who says he’s pro-life, but whose economic policies will certainly result in an increase in the number of abortions in this country, who is now the running mate of a man who made millions by investing in a company that disposes of aborted children (and with start-up money from the Salvadoran families who killed Archbishop Romero, priests, nuns, and countless peasants.  Great.

I’ve seen Paul Ryan’s bishop on EWTN and he didn’t seem to think Paul was anything but a serious and committed Catholic.  If he disagreed with the Ryan budget, that is his perogative, however, I never thought of going to the bishop for a lesson in micro-economics.  Paul Ryan cannot be put in the same boat with Pelosi, Sebelius and Biden who continually preface every attack on morals and ethics with the statement “I am a Catholic”.  As soon as they say it I cringe at what can possibly come after.  I was afraid Archbishop Dolan’s invitation would be held up by the Liberation catholics as permission to vote for Obama and I can see them jumping on it like a dispensation.  Since Romney is also invited, I see it as avoiding the guest list showing up in the press as an endorsement.  File under “damned if you do and damned if you don’t”.

J, the long and the short of it is that Paul Ryan differs with the bishops on matters where it is permissible for faithful Catholics to differ.  Pelosi, Biden, et al, differ with the bishops on matters where dissent is not permissible.

Of course, a faithful Catholic should never be cavalier in differing with his/her bishop, but should always do so with careful deliberation.  I believe in this case Paul Ryan does just that.

Micheal Novak’s not a theologian.

The thing to keep in mind is that Obamacare is destroying Medicare.  Elders will be denied coverage as funds are shifted away from Medicare.  In the eugenicist mindset of the O administration, the elderly are disposeable.  Ryan is offering a plan to try to preserve Medicare, shich is actually slated for destruction under Obamacare.  Note that the left always accuses their opposition of doing exactly what they themselves are doing.

November elections can’t get here soon enough! So excited for this awesome move by Romney!

My poor mom is up in years.  She is relentlessly barraged by “Social Security Alerts!!!!”  These are unscrupulous and extortionate attempts by mail to part mom from her money by mongering fear.  She worries herself into a frantic fit, because she depends so much on the pittance she receives from the gummint.  These people are reprehensible and disgusting - on a par with senders of “nigerian letters.”

It’s sad to think that the existence of half our political system has become predicated on this same cheap trick.

And let me get this straight, under the R&R ticket Americans are going to have to make sacrifices to get the economy back on track? Who wants to hear that message? ;0)

Catholic Social Teaching made simple:

The Catechism states that the fundamental unit of society is the family. When this breaks down (i.e out-of-wedlock relationships, divorce, abortion, etc…) society breaks down. The problem in this country is not an abundance of traditional families, but rather a LACK of them.

The mother-father family has been replaced by same-sex couples, the state, or single parents. This is how social ills begin. So, the principle of subsidiarity attempts to help fix this at the basic level. But, instead of fixing the problems through the local churches, extended families, smaller communities, we have run to the Federal Government to solve these problems and by-passed these other entities. For those who support larger government as the answer, the reason they are in favor of higher taxes is that they see the Frederal government as their charity instead of the Church. Instead of giving their money directly to charities that deal directly with the problems of poverty (i.e. the Sister’s of Charity - Mother Theresa’s order), they give their money through their taxes to get lost in the beaurocracy of Washington, which, additionally supports things that are not Catholic (i.e. abortion among many)

Whatever Mr. Ryan does he does it as a faithful Catholic and as a politician, he acts in the best interest of our country, that is a very rare combination, and Mr. Ryan achieves both.  God bless him and his family.

Suzan, a person isn’t necessarily FOR something because they are AGAINST something else.  In this case, you assumed that because I am against the Ryan budget proposal that I am, of course, for Obama’s policies. There are a freat many things we can’t afford in this country, endless war, corporate welfare, should I go on? I’m not so simpleminded.  The issues are complex. There are no easy fixes. Many things need to be reworked.  We can’t always be selfish and refuse to take care of our fellow man, which is where these policies are clearly headed. You see, I love God too and am trying to do as He says.  I don’t have much myself, but I don’t begrudge someone getting some help, there are people far worse off than I.  I’d rather have my tax dollars spent that way than to save someone’s poorly managed company or kill some more innocent people in a war.  I sincerely hope you, and other likeminded people, have a lot of money to fund the rest of your life and are never befallen by a catastrophic illness or injury.  It could get really rough.

And don’t forget the hunk factor! Two tall handsome men on the ticket is not a bad thing either!

Scott and Philip - are correct along with many others. WE NEED TO GO BACK TO BEN FRANKLIN’S WAY TO WEALTH and POOR RICHARDS’ ALMANAC.  We can’t get snap/welfare and wear new clothes(use the thrift stores), LEASE expensive cars (carpool, vanpool, use the bus during the day and/or get a good second hand cheap car) and smoke, drink and do drugs (get in shape mentally, physically, intellectually and spiritually) and have babies out of marriage.  ALSO Marriage needs to be “FOREVER.”  It’s the best insurance there is with strong families. Which by the way come first and before communities. The game IS OVER we’re all waking up (all over the world) to “smell the coffee.”  Reality bites.  The answer is what our ancestors have always taught EACH OF US: Frugality, modesty, wisdom, common sense, FATH AND CHARITABLE/CORPORAL WORKS in actions.  JOBS, Tax CUTS, and FAMILY-friendly-policies are what each of us need to safeguard America, our freedoms, future, families, and (YES..) OUR WORLD.

I really can’t take someone seriously who’s entire experience is the government but then says that the government is bad and needs to be cut.  What good fortune Mr. Ryan has to work in a job with the best government funded healthcare and pension our money can buy.  It’s also interesting how his budget safeguards folks over 55 (huge voting block).  Folks under 55 better start asking some question?  For starters, where is all the extra money going to come from to supplement your healthcare costs in your elder years when you will incur the greatest costs?  Maybe I’m in the wrong industry, but I only see healthcare costs going up and wages remaining stagnant.

So I pay for the most expensive entitlement generation in our country’s history and some how I’m supposed to pay for mine?  I would consider Ryan brave if every…I mean EVERY American had skin in the game.  But this is no better than the dems exempting unions.  Give me break.  If you are over 55, continue to be an idealouge….you have no skin in the game.  Under 55, the joke will be on you for sure.

David from Chicago,  I laughed when I saw your comment from Chicago.  I was raised by 2 parents from Chicago, lived there a number of years after college and have many relatives living there still. That is one insanely liberal town where people say they are practicing Catholics and then support politicians like Obama, Durbin, and Rahm Emanuel.  When Chicago politicians support the nauseating procedure of partial birth abortion many Chicago Catholics don’t bat an eye and say things like David.

You cannot prove that deficit reduction will increase the number of abortions. Cutting government funding of Planned Parenthood that promotes abortion will probably cut the number of abortions.  Prove the nonsense you spout about Romney’s investment supporting a company that disposes of aborted fetuses “and with start-up money from the Salvadorian families who killed Archbishop Romero, priests, nuns, and countless peasants”.

It sounds like you are an avid reader of the radical leftist blogs.  They really hate the fact that Romney is an extremely successful, brilliant (know anybody else who got their law degree and their MBA from Harvard simultaneously?). Paul Ryan knows budget matters and the economy better than anyone on the left and articulates them so clearly and well.  Obama has increased federal spending to an unsustainable level. That’s just immoral. Do you really think that the poor will do well when our economy continues to tank?

But I really don’t think you care about the poor. If you did, you wouldn’t want Obama et al to have another 4 years. Romney will improve the economy probably in his first month as businesses large and small breathe a sigh of relief that Obama is no longer strangling them.  The poor are always helped by a better economy. They have a better chance at getting a job and when people are doing better financially they give more to the poor.

There is much to admire in Mr Ryan.  American politics being what they are, alas, there are some things to be concerned about.

I certainly applaud his pro-life leanings.  I don’t applaud his slavishly pro-Israel war-mongering.  I hope that if elected he spends more time trying to end this horror of abortion and less time stumping for more unjust American wars.

Equal justice, not social justice

I had read that Card. Dolan invited the Pres. because all presidents were invited to this affair in the past. True or not??  The Catholic Church along with the Democrat Party have always believed in Social Justice. There is a flaw in it, that I experienced. During the Great Depression, the CC did little for the poor, because the poor in church did not work and could give little to the Church. Therefore, the government started their “give-away” programs like Welfare and CCC camps, and the CC was all for it.  The Government supports these programs with taxes from the rich….the CC, in the past had mostly hard-working people in their congregations, including all the Irish who came because of the Irish Famine and the Italians, Poles, etc. because there was nothing for them in their country.  Then, coming here they ran into a Depression.  The old saying then was “we were told the streets were lined with gold, we found no streets & we ended up building those streets. I personally live on SS and I take naught from the government and I see nothing wrong with people being rich. The biggest problem is the rich oft time keep their monies off-shore. Yes, people like Oprah Winfrey & the like give to charity, but they deduct it from their taxes, which is better for them, than paying the full amt to the government. What we need is jobs and with people working they can give their money to the Church and other Charities and support themselves…not have a socialistic government as most of Europe have. I definitely do not want my government supporting me. Yes, I do realize that there are some people, for one reason or another, who need help and they should get it from the Gov. & the Church., but I have seen with my own eyes the people who I call “grabbers, anything for nothing”

Ryan and Romney are both persons of fine character and embrace the central tenets of their faith.  They offer promise for the nation to return to confidence and economic stability from the current mood of failure, hopelessness and the government dependency that will bankrupt your great grandchildren.
While the progressives that are in power carefully cultivate and peddle their social platitudes to appear to be congruent with a few Catholic teachings, they are known to promote contraception, abortifacients, and, ultimately, elective abortion killings mostly of poor and minority infants in the womb.  And now, the resources of government and industry must find their way into spousal marriage benefits to feather the nests of gays and lesbians who pretend to be “married.”
The Roman Catholic demographic is alluring to politicians since being a Catholic offers a great political benefit at the polls.  Most of the progressive liberal ones park the principles of thei faith at the cathedral door on the way out however. When was the last time you heard one of them even speak out against the cultural defamation, invalidation, and marginalization of your church and its teachings by their friends in the media?

Obama and his Obamacare raped the Medicare Fund of ((( $717 BILLION ))). Paul Ryan’s plan PUTS THE $717 BILLION BACK INTO THE MEDICARE FUND. Let us Catholics not forget that Obama stripped the Free Exercise of Religion from the Constitution.  Government can now dictate what we Catholics will believe and practice. If we DO NOT COMPLY, WE GET FINED AND OR GO TO JAIL. This is NOW the law.

I hope Rob and Maryanne look at what is happening in Europe because that is the road we are on and will soon face. People are suffering and starving under austerity measures enacted because the government spent too much on social programs. Yes, we should help the poor- but Rob and Maryanne, define poor. What is poor in America? Under the Democrats, we have spent on our countries credit card until we can no longer afford to pay the balance or even the interest. We are going to go into a period of hyperinflation- and when we do, the poor will suffer like they have never suffered before. Lets get our spending under control so that the true poor can be cared for. Let’s create jobs to lift the poor out of poverty and restore their dignity. That is what Ryan’s plan will do. The choice is yours to make but if you make the wrong one, we all will suffer.

Dear Rob…As one of those over 55 I, like millions of others, have not only skin in the game but CASH!!! paid in over the decades we worked. We
are entitled not to have Mr Obama steal from the seniors entitlement program (Medicare) to the tune of 700 billion dollars to pay for his
underfunded health care system while we go without! When given the choice between Romney/Ryan (assuming the implementation of Ryan plan to preserve the system not only for us but also our children and grands)and the Obama/Biden ruse there is only one intelligent choice: Vote Romney/Ryan!!! It’s a no brainer for all but especially for seniors.

Go Ryan!

I’m a former life-long Democrat, now a registered Independent, since neither party fully reflects my views. I favor gun control, government aid to the poor, elderly disabled, and other vulnerable people, without creating a culture of dependency. I also oppose the death penalty, and favor war only as a last resort. However, I am strongly against abortion and gay marriage. I happen to be a gay Catholic, and struggle tremendously. I have several gay friends, and we treat each other with respect. I haven’t always been faithful to the Church’s moral code, but have been chaste for many years, and have found healing through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Although I find Romney and Ryan to be too conservative, I will vote for them. Not because I’m rich or ignorant (the stereotype of a Romney supporter). Without being prideful, I have a degree in Special Education, and have worked with disabled persons in various capacities for 25 years. I’m now partly disabled myself, and am honored to work part-time with a young man with muscular dystrophy. But as has been pointed out, the right to life of the innocent unborn and their mothers is a core Catholic teaching. Other issues (immigration reform, prison reform, aid to the poor, elderly, disabled, and veterans are important). However, the Church despite it’s failings (and ALL churches have their failings) does address these issues. The President’s HHS regulations will force Catholic and other religious hospitals to provide employee health benefits that will require dispensing abortion drugs. According to a 6/16/12 AP report, one out of every six Americans receive healthcare from Catholic hospitals. When these hospitals close-and sadly, they will-think of the resulting misery. Remaining hospitals will be overwhelmed by patients. No candidate is perfect, but a vote for Obama will mean the deathknell for religious freedom and good healthcare for all Americans.  Respectfully, Tim Donovan

One of the entitlements Paul Ryan wants to overhaul is Social Security. It isn’t just for our old age.  If a parent dies and leaves behind children under 18, the spouse and children are eligible for a social security survivors benefit. Ryan was 16 when he found he dad dead of a heart attack.  Very tough for him.  Anyway he received that survivors benefit for 2 years. He saved it and used it for college. Good for him.  But this is one of the benefits he would like to eliminate.

I am voting for the pro-life president-President Obama:

http://ncronline.org/news/politics/which-presidential-candidate-truly-pro-life

Charlotte Hays omitted from her article any mention of the pointed criticism of Paul Ryan’s budget proposal in the form of a letter to the US Congress from the Conference of Catholic Bishops in the US. The bishops wrote that the Ryan budget was “unjustified and wrong” and that the federal budget “must protect poor, vulnerable people.”

Bottom line is that if we don’t get Obama out of office NO ONE will get ANY help because the system will be so broke that there will be no jobs, and no money for medicare and SS. The system will be like a dry well, there will be no one to tax anyways!!Is that really what people want? If not, then get Obama out of office. That’s the main goal here. His plan has bankrupted America. If you want your country back then get to the polls and vote for Romney-Ryan. There will never be a perfect candidate because you cannot please everyone. But we have to focus on what the country needs now: MORE JOBS, REVITALIZED ECONOMY, OPPORTUNITIES TO GROW. Trust me: I have seen what socialism does to a country because I grew up in Venezuela. And that’s the same path Obama is on. Obama’s mentor was a red card carrying communist: therefore that is Obama’s platform. But as it is evident, Obama’s plan has failed. Proven record is that R&R can create jobs, they have done so in their own states, successfully, serving for numerous terms. We have to vote for the platform that the country NEEDS NOW - Vote with your brains people, vote based on the facts: Obama failed economic plan (no vote), vs R&R successful track record (vote).

It seems to me that Ryan’s version of Catholicism interprets the Gospel as teaching that a government that is “by the people, of the people and for the people” should not be charitable. There is nothing in Ryan’s budget that gets people working. It cuts support for the poor and middle class and at the same time cuts taxes for the wealthy. I have worked hard all my life but my 401k will not support me in my retirement and I am just under 55 now. So all you Catholics who will be voting for Romney and Ryan, please post your contact information so I will know where to go for charity to pay medical costs when I am too old and sick to work.  I am sure you will all be generous and charitable when I need your support to pay for the medical costs that Ryan’s voucher won’t cover. Thank you in advance.

Ryan has 100% prolife voting record with SBAnthony list. Considering the options that Obama/Biden have a 100%pro-choice record with NARAL, I am guessing that the R&R tickets is significantly more pro-life than the Obama-Biden ticket. That’s good enough for this pro-lifer considering these are the two options to choose from. Not voting in this election is essentially giving Obama a chance to win, and that cannot be an option for any American who actually values this country. Do you really want to hand over 40% of your paycheck to the government? You will if Obama is reelected. Voting for R&R will ensure Obama stays out of office and also ensures this country will Come Back!! R&R for the win!!!!!

Catholic Social Teaching:

Honor thy father and thy mother.
Thou shalt not kill.
Thou shalt not commit adultery.
Thou shalt not steal.
Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife.
Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s goods.

The Sins That Cry out to Heaven for Vengeance:

Murder.
Sodomy.
Treason.
Defrauding workers of their wages.

The Democratic Platform:

Murder.
Sodomy.
Treason.
Defrauding workers of their wages.

I am under 55 and I am voting to save social security for as many people as possible even if I see none of it.
I am voting to lessen the debt our selfish generation wants to leave on our children.
I am voting with 2 Thessalonians 3:10 in mind…“The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.”

A letter from nearly 90 faculty and administration officials at Georgetown informed Ryan that his budget plan “appears to reflect the values of your favorite philosopher, Ayn Rand, rather than the Gospel of Jesus Christ.” Can any of these Georgetown socialists refer me to the paragraph in the Catechism or Bible where Jesus asks us to use the coercive force of government to do God’s will?

Dear Claire: why don’t you read something from a true pro-life organization instead of from the liberal democratic wing NC Register.

Obama voted against the Born Alive act because he didn’t want the mother (???) to suffer with a baby that she wanted dead- not alive. Obama shows no mercy or love for the weakest and most helpless in our society. His out of control spending and weak job creating skills harm the weakest and most helpless in our society, too. But if you vote to re-elect Obama and he wins, I will meet you in the bread line and we can discuss true Catholic values.

I am impressed with Fr.Vincent Fitzpatrick and by Jim.  Short and to the point…not wordy like “old sue”....My immigrant parents worked hard to get their 6 children through high school…these 6 children worked hard to get their children through college…and on it goes. Work and you progress, keep getting handouts and you regress.

What happens if you happen to labor under the impression that both parties, and most of the US government, is so completely in bed with corporate interests that nothing even remotely resembling good policy can be created?

How does one vote when they believe all candidates for POTUS and VP are owned from floorboard to rafter by moneyed interests?

I don’t believe in Obamaney, nor do I believe in this latest addition.

Barbara…......If you think you will fare any better under OBAMA rule, you have not done your homework. Do you not understand DEATH PANELS?  You will not need charity because there will be rationing an no doctors!

Claire…......WAKE UP!!  You cannot be serious!  Refer to message above to Barbara.

Matt B…......I can relate. My mom was terrified when the Democrats told her that those nasty, cold-hearted Republicans were going to cut her health care and SS. She only received $600 a month. Try to live on that!!  The leaders of the Democratic Party have no conscience and all CATHOLICS had better wake up and educate themselves on the issues!  We have to get rid of everyone running who supports this administration. If we do not, GOD help us because HE is the only one that can.

BIG GOVERNMENT is the problem. And a GODless government cannot succeed.  When the government pays you not to work, why work?

I have a message to all so called liberal catholics,( which they are by name only)please leave or go with the teachings of the church, and quit making your own rules.  The catholic church stands firm and the gates of hell will not prevail against it. I don’t know where you got your teachings of the church from. There is only one place in mind I can only think of and that is where angels fear to tread.  GOD BLESS OUR POPE

Paul Ryan in 2005 appeared before the Atlas Society, a group devoted to perpetuating the philosophy of Ayn Rand, and spoke effusively about how important Ayn Rand’s works, especially “Atlas Shrugged”, were in his philosophical formation as a youth. Last year, when the movie “Atlas Shrugged - Part 1” (based on the first third of the book) was released, Ryan reiterated his praise for Rand’s philosophy.
But just recently, after more than 20 years of devotion to the ideas of Ayn Rand, he now says that he totally repudiates Ayn Rand’s ideas.
Congressman Ryan was either brainwashed, or made some terrible errors of judgement if he could adhere to a philosophy for more than 20 years, and suddenly overnight recants his beliefs.
How does he explain his failure to see the true nature of the message of “Atlas Shrugged”?

Joseph Curtin,
Some of what Ayn Rand espoused makes sense if seen through a Christian filter. Some of what Ron Paul says makes sense, too. After that, though, most Catholics take a different path from libertarianism. That’s what Paul Ryan seems to have done.

@ Joseph Curtin - I was not aware he repudiated “Ayn Rand’s ideas.” Certainly his voting record speaks louder than words and here’s a few - YES on extending the PATRIOT Act’s roving wiretaps; YES on making the PATRIOT Act permanent; YES on continuing intelligence gathering without civil oversight; YES on allowing electronic surveillance without a warrant; YES on The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) aka “indefinite detention”. He has also been supportive on increased military spending oversees and worldwide military intervention. Is that what you are referring to or something else?

@Joseph Curtain….Paul Ryan NEVER adhered to the Rand philosophy of objectivism as you state. He has never been an atheist nor a promoter
of her philosophy which most are finding objectionable.  He has evoked some of her principles on economy…as have many other conservatives. ANYWAY…if Obama can “evolve” (i.e. his flip/flop on homesexuality and same sex marriage;even Reverend Wright and best buddy William Ayres) why cannot Ryan be allowed the same “liberty” to change

@ Thirst for Truth - Well, while I don’t agree with Rand on her atheism, I do find her libertarian views on non coercion and freedom to line up quite nicely with the free will God gives us. You may want to explore some of the work of Father Sirico from the Acton Institute. Specifically, “Defending the Free Market: The Moral Case for a Free Economy.” My guess is that Jesus would not ask us to hold our neighbors at gunpoint to finance a Police or Welfare state. Just saying…

Dialogue between Paul Ryan and Cardinal Dolan:
http://budget.house.gov/fy2012budget/dolandialogue.htm

@ Gary…I don’t quite get your point re Rand and Ryan, the issue here.
I don’t have to “quess” how Jesus wants us to treat our neighbor. And I don’t have to “quess” what part Rand is acceptable to Ryan today and what part is not acceptable nor ever has been to Ryan. He has stated very articulately, as the Vice Presidential Republican candidate, his view on this matter. There is no need to “quess”; just a need to listen and not put words in his mouth.
In other words, listen to the man and what he is saying…without reinterpreting today in light of what he might or might not have said years ago. As the late Archbisop Sheen was known to have said, that among the anti-Catholics, there is a great deal of difference between what they think the Catholic church stands for and the reality of its tenets. The same can be said here regarding Ryan; a great deal of difference between what people think he promotes(thanks to the politics of destruction) and where he actually stands. There is a moral obligation on the part of each voter to make that distinction, and not just in the case of Ryan only. This requires more effort than simply listening to the emotional appeals put forth by the Superpacs!

Let me get this talking point I see all over ncregister.com straight; Paul Ryan studies atheist Ayn Rand and that’s a bad thing, therefore we shouldn’t accept to what he has to say. So, I guess that means we should not use light bulbs and anything else Thomas Edison invented because he was also an atheist?

@ Thirstfor Truth - With politicians, I prefer to look at their voting record rather than listen to what they are saying. Unfortunately, politicians are not liable for what they say (they do take an oath of office though so they’ll have to answer to God). What I would hope for is that Paul Ryan would consider what he learned from Ayn Rand before voting on NDAA, Patriot Act, bailouts and other statist measures. Unfortunately, in my opinion, he voted the wrong way.

I guess the Democrats who are complaining about Ryan/Rand….should also be complaining about Obama/Alinsky [but they’re not]

@ Sue - Don’t worry, I won’t be voting for Democrats either! I’m one of the growing number of people that refuse to vote for left-wing or right-wing socialists. Unlike most Dems and Reps, Ron Paul took his oath seriously. I would have voted for him. The Republican Party treatment of Ron Paul is disgraceful. I won’t be watching the convention - more time for prayer!

@ Sue…You make an excellent point! However Republicans are held to different standards…and far closer scrutiny than either Democrats
or Obmama. This President was elected by the media with their deviously designed plan of NEVER allowing him to be questioned on serious issues and giving him a pass on each and every gaffe he has made. This is what Obama has come to expect and depend upon from the media. Thus his record of failure is skipped over for matters of more “gravitas” like Paul Ryan’s
reading preferences and Romeney’s dog!
@Gary…I too like to consider the record and I would love to see the
campaign debate the record of our current Administration! But the media
is in control…and few voters know the real truth of what is going on
right under their noses! I think you will know more about Paul Ryan( not
necessarily the truth) in the next few months than any of us will ever
know about the real Barack Obama! Media matters!when it comes to elections. The good thing is now we have the internet…and thus we will
not have to filter everything thru the Network news!

The general public 99.9% are against abortions. There are concerns about whether there is government intervention or religious intervention interfering with a life and death decision between a doctor and the mother.
Please if u do not have heart please have a legitimate long term solution for the future of both.  No gray areas allowed.

I agree with traditional marriage as long as it involves children and raising them. I do not believe in traditional divorces and adultery. A traditional marriage can include adopting children. Marriage between a man and woman without children is not catholic.

Is it possible to have too much wealth at the expense of a larger debt.

It is safe to say that I fear for the Catholic Church if romney is elected.
We should be electing Ryan. Romneys cabinet will be elders of the mormon faith and all of them will be considered next to God.  They will demand absolute obedience from everyone. I am scared.

@Gary
If you really cared for liberty you would vote to get Obama out of office.
Business owners I know are afraid of the Obama administration. Your smug “purity” will be little comfort as Obama makes laws by fiat that take more and more of your liberty away, replace you at work with govt union workers or decide that your retirement savings must be shared with others.
