Indeed, this question of ‘Are Catholics Christians?’ has baffled me no end. Did not Christianity begin with the Catholic Church? Did not Jesus build his Church upon the first Pope - Peter - whose current successor is Pope Benedict XVI himself? Can someone enlighten me on how and when this ‘Catholics are not Christians’ canard began? Is this just an American Catholic issue? (Because no such question exists in my country of origin - the only majority (nominally) Catholic country in SE Asia.)
Having grown up in the South all my life, NC and GA, I can tell you that Catholics are not considered Christian by the most evangelical protestants. It seems ridiculus to Catholics and non Catholics from other parts of the country or world, but bible belt protestants truly do NOT believe we are Christian and even chuckle at you when you explain Church teachings and defend the Faith. A deep and through understanding of apologetics is pratically a necessity for a Catholic in the deep south because you will constantly be asked and laughed at for your faith, if you live it openly and unapologetically. I take it in stride and use the questions and ridiculus claims I hear as ways to bring about their conversion. We must pray for them always and offer up our suffering so that they may see the Truth and beauty of the Church founded by Christ himself.
