New Poll Shows How Strongly Americans Oppose the HHS Mandate (3470)

Women especially are displeased. The president's approval rating has also dropped as a result of the federal rule.

A recent poll shows that President Barack Obama’s approval ratings dropped 12 percentage points among women voters, despite claims that a federal contraception mandate would help his bid for re-election.

“It’s definitely something that young women are concerned about,” said Kristan Hawkins, executive director of Students for Life of America.

Hawkins told CNA on March 13 that beyond just contraception or abortion, the mandate touches on the issue of religious freedom, which is clear to any woman in the U.S., “whether she’s religious or not.”

“It goes too far,” she said, adding that women are beginning to ask fundamental questions about what the government would be able to regulate next if this mandate were to succeed.

In recent weeks, political analysts have suggested that Obama’s re-election campaign will receive a significant boost in women’s votes due to its support for the controversial federal contraception mandate

But a New York Times/CBS News poll shows that Obama’s approval rating among women has plummeted at three times the rate as men within the last few weeks.

The poll, conducted March 7-11, revealed that the president’s approval rating among Americans has fallen from 50% last month to an all-time low of 41%.

While Obama’s approval rating dipped just four percentage points among men, it dropped by 12 percentage points among women.

The bishops and numerous other groups have called for legislation to either overturn the mandate or implement an effective religious exemption.

Majorities of both men and women in the New York Times/CBS News poll also voiced support for religious and moral exemptions to the mandate.

Those polled believe by a 57% to 36% margin that religiously affiliated employers should be able to “opt out” of covering the full cost of birth control and related drugs if they have objections to doing so.

Fifty-one percent say they support an exemption for all employers who have religious or moral objections to the mandate.

The poll findings come as the Obama administration launched increased efforts within the last week to bolster support among women voters by appealing to the health-care law. On March 12, more than 1 million mailings were sent to women nationwide in separate versions for mothers, older women and young women, reported The New York Times.

Hawkins said that her organization is “comprised of mostly young women” who see religious-freedom concerns being raised by the mandate and do not accept the administration’s claims that it is looking out for women’s health.

She pointed out the irony in the fact that she, as the employer of a pro-life organization that seeks to end abortion, would be required under the mandate to offer an insurance plan that covers abortion-causing drugs.

“There’s no freedom at that point,” she said.

Hawkins said she has “pro-choice” friends as well who oppose the mandate for forcing people to violate their consciences. They realize that the mandate is “not about contraception” and “not about women’s health,” she said.

She also decried the efforts of those who have been “using women’s health” to promote the mandate, stressing “they’re not doing it for me.”

Hawkins encouraged women to take an active role in the political battle by contacting their congressmen and making their voices heard.

When people are talking about the upcoming elections, they should be talking about this issue, she said, adding that men and women should work together to show the Obama administration that “this is not the will of the American people.”

this administration is not concerned for women but rather the homosexual movement and it’s no surprise to me as a woman.
Also, this president has been the most “polarizing” president ever in U.S. history, pinning black against white, and the have against the have nots and now attempting to take Christ out of our nation.
As I see it, this president is “not” a christian but a Muslim and has attempted to put on a christian face.  What’s ironic is that Muslims do not believe in abortion, so why is their outcry on this issue??  And, why hasn’t Obama mentioned to the Muslims that they too, must adhere to this policy on abortion?

Women should also sign the letter at http://www.womenspeakforthemselves.com It is. for women to say that the HHS does not speak for all women and that we do not want this mandate.

Personally I believe the mandate is the first step into forcing contraceptives and sterilizations on women that don’t want any of it so they can enforce a one child policy like China has. Since the current administration admires the abuse of women in China.

Polls are so useless 99% of the time, and 100% mindless all of the time. Let us see just how many “catholics” will vote for the big ‘o’ this Nov., including Bishops and Priests. When we live in or condon sin, we will have to answer to Jesus face to face, no matter how we “voted” in a poll.  +JMJ+

I definitely am against this mandate and if we don’t stop this tyranny the next step will be to limit the number of children we are allowed to have - just like in China.  God, please help us before it goes any further. It seems as if every day our president is taking away rights granted us by the Natural Law and so many people do not even realize what he is doing.  Just look at what has happened already in the world and if it something against the Christian population - no matter what country - he has no sympathy whatever, but against Islam - apology is forthcoming immediately.  We need to bend our knee in prayer not just Catholics and Evangelicals, but all people of all faiths,  Muslims included.

I already submitted my comment but failed to hit the notify box.

That is not at all far-fetched.  If you consider only the information provided in the HHS mandate (http://www.hhs.gov/news/press/2012pres/01/20120120a.html), there is no conceivable downside to the measures it promotes.  If something is so positively and unarguably beneficial for citizens (and those who pay for their health care) that we can justify penalizing employers for not doing everything they can to encourage its use, it is indeed a small step to penalizing citizens for not actually using it.
