Michael Warsaw, president and Chief Executive Officer of EWTN, issued this statement today in reaction to President Obama’s announcement of an “accommodation” to the Health and Human Services rule that all employers cover contraceptives and sterilizations. The network yesterday filed a lawsuit against HHS because the rule violates the religious liberty guaranteed by the Bill of Rights.
“I am certainly pleased to see that EWTN’s decision to file suit against the recent contraception mandate of the Department of Health and Human Services may have played some role in forcing the administration to revisit the application of these rules on religious institutions. However, we remain quite skeptical that the changes announced by President Obama will in fact address the concerns raised by EWTN.
“According to a White House statement, some religious institutions may no longer be required to directly provide insurance coverage for contraception, sterilization and abortion-inducing drugs; however, this accommodation may not actually apply to EWTN or actually give any relief to the network and other similar organizations. Like EWTN, many religious institutions self-insure their health-care plans, meaning that we will still be forced to pay for these services in violation of our religious beliefs. Today’s announcement certainly does not give any hope to countless individual business owners and people of faith who share the concern about being required to provide for these services which they personally find immoral.
“EWTN is particularly concerned that the proposed rules for non-exempted religious organizations will still not be finalized until later in the coming year. This leaves EWTN and other such organizations very uncertain about what the future may hold with regard to this mandate. We will continue to consult with our legal counsel at the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty to determine the implications of this revised approach; however, our legal action against the administration will continue.”

the USCCB led by Arch. Dolan stands with you. Let’s urge the Bishops to tell Catholics that they must vote for strong pro-life candidates in the Primaries and Nov. We must also ask Arch. Dolan to withdraw “Faithful Citizenship” - the old seamless garment ideology which has gotten us in the dire situation we face today.
It seems to me that the WH merely closed a loophole, the very narrow exemption. Formerly, churches which employed only those of their faith could opt out. Now that all insurance providers will be offering “free” contraceptive for ALL health plans, there will be no place to go to opt out. Instead, the “free” contraceptives will be paid for by premiums which employers and employees will both pay. This is smoke and mirrors.
Calling a dog a pig does not mean you have bacon. This is still a dog.
The Fed has no constitutional right to mandate that any individual purchase anything. Don’t get distracted by the appearance of moderating this offense. They have no right to do ANY of this. Don’t let them tell you they are giving us a gift to slightly change the unlawful thing to a re-packaged unlawful thing.
The announcement by the President,does not give a solution to the imposition of the goverment in the contraceptive issue. I suppose the insurance companies will increase the premiums including the Catholic institutions to pay for abortions,pills and any other aternative for that manner. I really believe this issue is a precedent to very serious problems concerning conscience manners.
No employer, religious or otherwise should be forced to provide abortion or contraception coverage if it is against their conscience. And no individual should be forced to participate in a plan which subsidizes such services against their personal beliefs. We are a Catholic family but my husband works at a car dealership, not at a church, so we will still be forced to accept objectionable insurance which subsidizes abortion and other things we believe are sinful. To require this of any individual is UNCONSTITUTIONAL and violates the basic principle of individual liberty.
That is what Mother Angelica would do - not back down. God is on EWTN’s side. Our Lady, pray for us.

What change?
I hope that someone will speak up for us small business Catholic employers. Currently in NYS contaception is a mandated coverage if you provide prescription coverage for your employees and only the large catholic institutions can claim consciense objection. At least right now we can shop for an insurance provider who does not have prescrition coverage embedded in their plan but if this federal mandate takes effect we will not have any choice left but to not provide the insurance and face the fines. Please remember that freedom of religion is for all citizens and not just the large comglomerates.

Thank you, EWTN. I donated. I think businesses REALLY need to speak up. We also need organized laity to speak up against the whole concept of the government mandating ANYONE to provide sterilization/abortifacient/contraceptive coverage. It is very harmful to individuals, families, society. Most people have never heard it explained well why NOT contracept.

How come we haven’t heard from all the different Women’s Lib Organizations, only the women have obligations toward contraceptive, etc. and not the men? If you self ensure and none of your employees request a prescription for contraceptives, you will not have to pay for them. If no employee of EWTN requests the drugs, they will not be paid for by EWTN, self-ensured.
This probably includes vasectomy for men, already.

b) Actively and brutally promoting the tearing and disrupting the millions of baby’s limbs and members apart without care for the infant victim.
c) Deceptively circumventing / avoiding any open description on its part which recognises and describes the horrific detail and consequences which maliciously effects the mother and the aborted child.
d) Actively opposed to Judaic,Christian,Islamic and other Religious principles and belief which promote and protect the intrinsic right to life.

As in any war there is flack and fallout. What we are witnessing by this
anti-Christian regime called the Government is flack, they have handed out a bone. This will divert all Christians of sincerity is their hope. Then when Obama-care goes into place, fines will ensue, care will be rationed especially for pregnancy, so will it be for the elderly. Just as the Executive order to stem the Obama-care’s passage was used as a ploy to fool Senator Bart Stupak. It did not stem the abortions nor will this handout. It is divisive, and subversive. This Government has become the most killing of all, more than all the wars this Nation has ever seen, and when you count the generation as the only one killed. There are all those that those killed will never bring to life. Total life lines gone, eternally. This is a conquer and divide tactic. This is evil personified.
