The Eighth Commandment is clear: Thou shall not bear false witness.
The Catechism states that misrepresenting the truth to harm another’s reputation violates the Eighth Commandment, given by God to Moses, and Jesus’ commandment in the Gospel of Matthew, love your neighbor as yourself (2477-2479). Just over an hour after Jorge Bergoglio was announced as Pope Francis, a devastating example of false witness against the Holy Father was winging its way around the world.
Media outlets seized on the allegation that Pope Francis was guilty of conspiring with a violent Argentinean military dictatorship to kidnap two Jesuit priests, Father Franz Jalics and Father Orlando Yorio, in May 1976.
The military was in power from 1976 to 1983 and is blamed for the unjust deaths of approximately 9,000 innocent people, according to an independent truth commission. The period is sometimes referred to as the “Dirty War.”
The story circulated internationally was that Father Jorge Bergoglio, Argentina’s Jesuit provincial (director) from 1973-1979, effectively released the priests to thugs who kidnapped and tortured them for five months. Supposedly, Father Bergoglio turned on these young priests because they had defied his order to leave the slums.
Yet Father Jalics himself reacted to allegations against the new Pope in a straightforward statement March 20 from a German monastery: “It is wrong to assert that our capture took place at the initiative of Father Bergoglio.”
The next day, Argentinean Nobel Peace Prize winner Adolfo Perez Esquivel told reporters in Rome, “The Pope had nothing to do with the dictatorship. He was not an accomplice of the dictatorship. … Of this, I’m sure.” Perez Esquivel received the prize in 1980 for defending human rights under the dictatorship.
Others — including Judge Alicia Oliveira, historian Loris Zanatta and human-rights leader Graciela Fernandez Meijide — contradict the allegations. Journalist Sergio Rubin, who wrote a biography of Bergoglio, said the Pope took risks and worked behind the scenes to gain release for the two priests.
A few high-profile news outlets have declared the Pope exonerated. The New York Daily News, for example, wrote a positive editorial March 23, “The Good Name of Francis: Baseless Allegations Against the Pope Suggested He Was an Ally of Argentina’s Murderous Regime.”
Despite the occasional correction, these accusations damage the Pope’s reputation: Who fabricated this malicious story — and why?
On March 15, papal spokesman Father Federico Lombardi sternly rejected the lies as coming from “anti-clerical, left-wing elements that are used to attacking the Church,” without naming names.
Astonishingly, the Pope’s chief accuser is one man, a notorious 71-year-old left-wing Argentinean journalist, Horacio Verbitsky, who outlined the story in the 2005 book The Silence: From Paul VI to Bergoglio: The Secret Relations Between the Church and ESMA. (ESMA refers to a military detention center used to interrogate and detain suspected suspects under the military rule of 1976-1983.)
The problem, however, wasn’t simply that overeager journalists were seizing on a book with the new Pope’s name in the title.
Verbitsky seems to have actively promoted this accusation, even naming the new Pontiff the “Pope of the Dictatorship,” an echo of the slanderous moniker given to Pope Pius XII: “Hitler’s Pope.”
On March 14, the morning after Pope Francis greeted the world, Verbitsky repeated his claims on a nationally syndicated American radio program that Pope Francis was directly in touch with this murderous military dictatorship and personally facilitated the kidnapping of two priests.
A few days later, on March 16, the British newspaper The Mail on Sunday printed copies of ambiguous documents ostensibly demonstrating Bergoglio’s guilt.
According to the British paper, “The damning report was handed to The Mail on Sunday by leading Argentine author and human-rights activist Horacio Verbitsky, who began investigating Bergoglio shortly after he was named archbishop of Buenos Aires in February 1998.”
“Author,” “investigative journalist,” “human-rights activist” — these descriptors attached to Verbitsky’s name all denote neutrality.
But Verbitsky is not impartial. Rather, he has been a dedicated antagonist of the Catholic Church for his entire career, according to political analysts and clerics in Argentina, as was his father, Bernard, who was active in Argentina’s Communist Party.
Verbitsky was involved in a violent, extremist organization that was active in the 1970s, Montoneros, which is blamed for bombings, kidnappings and bank heists in Argentina, modeling its tactics on the communist takeover of Cuba. Verbitsky confirmed he was a member of Montoneros but said he wasn’t a leader.
In fact, Verbitsky and six guerrilla colleagues were prosecuted for executing a 1976 bombing at a federal police office that killed 21 people. The case was dismissed in 2007, based on an interpretation of the definition of terrorism. Violence by organizations such as Montoneros provided the rationale in 1976 for the military coup d’etat, which practiced its own brand of terrorism but stepped aside for democratic elections in 1983.
Although there were Catholic bishops who opposed the military regime (two were killed in suspicious car accidents) and religious and seminarians were among its victims, there were also Catholic priests implicated in “Dirty War” activities, such as serving as chaplains to units engaged in torture. As the country reflected on the past, many concluded that the Church should have stood more resolutely against tyranny.
As a result, in 2000, Argentina’s bishops, including then-Archbishop Bergoglio, asked the country for forgiveness in a dramatic statement: “We ask your forgiveness, O God, for the silent responsibility and the effective participation of the Church’s children in pushing aside human rights, in tortures and rapes, in intransigent ideologies and in foolish deaths that bloodied our country.”
The apology by the Argentinian bishops did not satisfy Horacio Verbitsky, who, that same year, became president of the Center for Legal and Social Studies (CELS), which is dedicated to publicizing human-rights abuses committed during the “Dirty War.”
CELS was financed by the Ford Foundation, George Soros’ Open Society Foundation and even the U.S. taxpayer-funded entity the National Endowment for Democracy.
The Ford Foundation granted CELS almost $2.5 million between 2000 and 2009. In 2011, Ford gave CELS $1 million, and it announced another $1-million award last July for the group to become a “global leader.”
It has become a “global leader” with the dubious distinction of being the only non-governmental organization in the world that publicly opposed the selection of Pope Francis as soon as he was selected, as reported by CNN.
During the last decade, Verbitsky’s main political activities involved promoting first Nestor Kirchner, Argentina’s president from 2003 to 2007, then the late president’s wife, Cristina Kirchner, who has held the presidential office since 2007. The socialist “presidential marriage” (as the Argentine media calls it) has dominated the country for the last decade. The Economist, in its March 23 edition, called Verbitsky the “chief propagandist for the Kirchner governments” as editor of the pro-government newspaper Page 12. Especially after Nestor Kirchner’s death of a heart attack in 2010, Horacio Verbitsky has served as Cristina Kirchner’s confidante.
The media has focused most often on the clash between Cristina Kirchner and Archbishop Bergoglio over same-sex “marriage,” but, in fact, Archbishop Bergoglio expressed concern about economic policies that risk harming people at large.
A series of economic policy initiatives demonstrates Cristina Kirchner’s admiration for the socialist agenda of Hugo Chavez’s Venezuela: She nationalized Argentina’s largest airline, took control of billions of dollars worth of private pension funds and tried to impose a grain-export tax that farmers vociferously protested.
As The Wall Street Journal’s Latin America analyst, Mary Anastasia O’Grady, observed in a March 17 commentary, “Argentines who want their country to be the next Venezuela see Francis as an obstacle” because he does not hesitate to criticize politicians who claim to be benefiting the people when they are in fact consolidating power.
Naming Horacio Verbitsky as the prime mover behind the “smear campaign” against Pope Francis, O’Grady explained how this “propaganda” links to the left’s strategy in the 1970s: “Former members of terrorist groups like Mr. Verbitsky, and their modern-day fellow travelers in the Argentine government, have used the same tactics for years to try to destroy their enemies — anyone who doesn’t endorse their brand of authoritarianism.”
A partisan agitator such as Horacio Verbitsky seems to perceive the Catholic Church as an enemy regardless of the circumstances, one decade to another. Why? Because, at its best, the Church serves as a moral authority that can stand up to regimes bent on controlling the lives and minds of its citizens.
Yale professor Carlos Eire, T. Lawrason Riggs Professor of History and Religious Studies at Yale University, and a Cuban-born Catholic, spoke to the Register to explain why socialist regimes are particularly dangerous to the Catholic Church: “The Marxists and left-wing movements will always insist on ideological purity and conformity, which means they want to claim the heart and soul of every citizen. This will always be a very serious threat to the Church and to believers.”
Horacio Verbitsky’s obsessive attempts to harm Pope Francis are audacious; that he receives financial support from American institutions is even more shocking.
And it should be remembered that the permanent injury to Pius XII’s good name — caused by the lies perpetrated about alleged refusal to help Jews during World War II — also derived in substantial measure from a smear campaign launched by a single man. In 1963, with the hidden backing of international communist networks and sympathizers, German playwright Rolf Hochhuth published his fictional play The Deputy. Because Hochhuth’s smears were not properly rebutted at the time, they have perpetuated for decades afterward.
That’s why it’s so important that Verbitsky’s lies about Pope Francis should be countered effectively now — before they too have a chance to cause permanent harm to the reputation of a holy pope.

Lone Thinker, Obviously you basis in attacking Nancy is personal preference, opinions and assumptions or an intellect as you would have gladly proved her wrong. “It is better to have little knowledge with humility and a weak understanding, than greater treasures of learning with self-conceit”. Imitation of Christ, Book 3, Chapter 7
Lone Thinker - Is Nancy correct and if not prove it or apologize for your errors.
Some supposed female used the use of my e-mail given to you Joe who used the word conciliarism to say she did not agree with it. I made no reference to conciliarism I referred to the canonical election in Canon Law of the Bishop of Rome. His comments on the topic under discussion were twisted, made quite clear by NCRegister, not the NCReporter which is not consistently orthodox Catholic. Some of you still snipw, swipe and seem to be Sede Vacante- ites. Count me out of this contest.
I was hoping you would return, Nancy. Have you (and Lone Thinker) read:
“Vatican II, Homosexuality & Pedophilla” by Atila Sinke Guimarâes and
“Rite of Sodomy” by Randy Engel?
The reason I stated that the statement by Pope Francis does not need clarification is because one cannot support same-sex sexual “unions” without supporting same-sex sexual acts.
You are a typical conciliarists in your resistance to facts. I would gladly post groups and names if moderator will allow me. I’ve nothing to hold back. It’s a matter of saving souls. My major issue is the destruction of Catholicism in parochial schools in case you might not have grabbed a hold of this. Of course you fear listening!! BTW, I don’t want “pastoral”, I want what Holy Mother the Church teaches and what has been handed on. These pastoral situational and current tactics are for the most part revolutionary and in contrast to Sacred Tradition. I do not seek People of God interpretations or counsel. My life changes are based on credible priests and bishops who lead with the Apostolic Faith. Nancy was very specific in her citation. I do not have the book. Do YOU?
I relent Joe. @Hotmail.com. hfbhermitage. That is where I do my Lone Thinker work but operate in the ORB of the entire catholic Church. above error repeated actual after actually and GOT really tired… Catch you in the morning, we are on Europe time.
Joe: IF you actually read Cdl. Bergoglio’s actual text, and are aware of my posts on here, including those who dare to tell cardinals their pastoral business, and do not really read all the original texts. I owe you nothing I no longer teach Logic 101 and to really tired trying to teach remedial reading to University students. On second thoughts, do not send me your material. Taking blind swipes anonymously at the groups and a canonist you may not name here as well as your effort to defend Nancy require that I say Thanks but no thanks.
LoneThinker - I tried accessing you and was not successful. Keeps giving me spelling error.
JOE. Would be happy to receive such at Hotmail.com. hfbhermitage. Subject line JOEYOUTHHELP. That way you will be kept out of the Hades Tank. BTW For those who take swipes at my Lone Thinker, the point is I swim against the haters who so self-righteously decree who are worthy to be Catholic AND on the other side, those w"ho determine what “Everyone should think.” “Sentire cum Ecclesia, to THINK with the Church puts many of us at odds with the PC Crowd Picky Choosy (Catholics) and PC Pretty Cocky (Political leaders, MSM and Bent Left cafeteria Natural Law selectors
Lonethinker - prove your point if you can. Don’t just ‘say Nancy is wrong!’
nancy You are grammatically incorrect as you interpret this actual citation from Cardinal Bergoglio and have slandered and libelled His Holiness and the College of Cardinals and the office of Peter’s successor. Please recant and withdraw your own sinful misreading of his actual words.
Lonethinker, I’ve purchased the series and put them into hands of people whom I thought would care enough to speak in defense of our youth, our most precious resourse. To my amazement even claimed pro-life groups, universities, and canonists (I would name them but moderator won’t let it be posted) are willing to be accomplices, be silent and stay in their comfort zones. Did you view MothersWatch on the “Growing in Love” series?
This statement made by Pope Francis in regards to same-sex sexual unions, needs no clarification:
“If there is a union of a private nature, THERE IS NEITHER A THIRD PARTY NOR IS SOCIETY AFFECTED. Now, if the union is given the category of marriage and they are given adoption rights, there could be children affected. Every person needs a male father and a female mother that can help them shape their identity.” - (page 117, On Heaven and Earth)
Men and women have been designed by God in such a way that it is impossible for same-sex sexual acts, which can never be unitive and procreative, to respect the personal and relational Dignity of the persons engaging in same-sex sexual acts. Same-sex sexual acts do not serve the Good of Society, and are a violation of The Word of God. All persons have been endowed by God with the inherent Right to be treated with Dignity and Respect in private, as well as in public. Pope Francis is not in communion with The Catholic Church, and thus his election as Pope is invalid. (Catholic Canon 750)
Did you check out the text of growing in Love Joe or rely on gossip/rumour; Nancy please correct your syntax re pope Francis, your first sentence.
No need to clarify why Pope Francis supported same-sex sexual unions when one cannot support same-sex sexual unions without supporting same-sex sexual acts? Read the statement Pope Francis made on page117 of his book On Heaven and Earth.
will anything be done about the “Growing in Love” series in parochial schools that teachese that homosexuality is an acceptable option?
No need to clarify. He was speaking of civil society’s need to regulate arrangements for rights, property, inheritance, insurance, children and ex-partners and separated/divorced spouses/partners and any of their children, and visitation and medical records. Idiots who push same-gender unions ignore all that and same for divorce in Ireland, and when its full ramifications were seen in the USA, and now a push for legal same gender unions equal to marriage in Ireland. Total legal chaos. Abortion of course will never satisfy most normal thinkers. How wrong does it become until legally stopped until finally outlawed and Natural Law takes over. Papa Bergoglio was an aware archbishop.
Bernie, if it is not true, as many newspapers have reported, that Pope Francis supported same sex sexual unions, and thus same sex sexual acts, then why has there been no statement from The Vatican stating that Pope Francis does not support same sex sexual unions and thus clarifying his position on same-sex unions?
Prove what you said, Bernie, Please! Don’t just say it. Right away after the Boston marathon attacks CNN was saying it could be right wing extremist but they had no facts, no citations, no prove! Talking points must have references, must have history or they are just meant to slander. Answer Nancy D with what you know to be truth. Of course Nancy could not post why she stated what she did because moderator will not allow it. I know because moderator blocked things I’ve posted in this discussion.
This is simply the latest in a long line of attacks by the Left against Christians, conservatives and the Catholic Church. All you need to know about this Verbitsky and his organization is that they are pawns of George Soros - IMO the most EVIL man walking the face of the earth. “By their fruits shall ye know them.”
I am concerned about the reports that Pope Francis has supported same sex sexual unions and thus same sex sexual acts. If these reports are true, Pope Francis is not in communion with The Catholic Church.
Declaration of Resistance to the Vatican Ostpolitik Plinio Corrêa de Oliveira
With its Ostpolitik with communist countries, the Vatican was sending an unspoken message to Catholics: Stop fighting against Communism.
I know of a Catholic priest who had to flee with his family from the takeover of communists in the mid ‘70s. He’s an expert on the current threat of communism that has infiltrated our religion, our schools, and all society. Communism is more dangerous today because they are taking over without firing a shot a they promised without blood shed and concentrations camps.
Concepts and principles of raising children are rooted in this takeover. And American Catholics are snoozing in their comfort zones all the while youth especially are being used to destroy Catholicism. It’s all part of the communist controlling agenda.
The CHURCH in Council never condemned LUTHER or CALVIN or ZWINGLI either. The COUNCIL OF TRENT did say IF anyone teaches thus and so, that is false. Same goes for COMMUUNISM and variations thereof, the Natural Law principles about property, freedom of religion and the boundaries of State control over education, marriage and travel, all Natural Rights that were defined in 1948 by the UN are examples of the Natural Law being declared formally. Pius 1X condemned Nazism in Mit Brenndender Sorge, drafted by Cdl E Pacelli later Pius X11, former Nuncio to Germany. Same goes for those who fault JP11 for not consecrating Russia to the IH Mary, he did and said so but some are never satisfied, even though he was shot on 13 May the feast day of OL Fatima
There is an absence of any reference to, or condemnation of, Communism in the Council’s documents, despite the Soviet Union at that time of the Council being at the height of its powers.
Why was it excluded? A secret accord made at Metz gives the answer. It was established that Communism would not be condemned by Vatican Council II. Communism was and is a principal enemy of the Catholic Church. It has been condemned numerous times by the Magisterium.
Thanks Mary. We definitely need to put all our trust in Jesus Christ our Lord! Praise the Lord for another prayer warrior as yourself!
Linda Stump - Way to Go!!! Yes, we need to pray for all, particularly those who have not seen the light of Christ! And, yes, every day. God bless you.
The Church will always be a threat to Marxist and left wing governments; that’s why they hate it. We’ll also be a thorn in the side to capitalistic nations that use people and natural resources without regard for the dignity of human beings and the holiness of the earth.

Why is a pre Vatican II Pontifical pronouncement always blocked?
Men need to combat men!
“Christians are, moreover, made for combat….To recoil before an enemy, or to keep silence when from all sides such clamors are raised against truth . . . is insulting to God, and both are incompatible with the salvation of mankind.” ‘SAPIENTIAE CHRISTIANAE’
http://www.papalencyclicals.net/Leo13/l13sapie.htm
the truth will out by the grace of God
Holy Mother Church does not deceive nor is deceived. Something is seriously wrong with this picture:
“We ask your forgiveness, O God, for the silent responsibility and the effective participation of the Church’s children in pushing aside human rights, in tortures and rapes, in intransigent ideologies and in foolish deaths that bloodied our country.”
Yes, people are deceived and people do deceive, but NEVER must it be implied of the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. Targeting Christ’s Church to be wrong is wrong.
who is deleting positive replies to posts?
MeaCulpa1,
This is not flattery, but rather what we call an honoring. You wrote this so beautifully and with respect. I thank you. What you say in this May 30 post is clear and doesn’t reek of bitterness. No kidding, I almost felt like Alice stepping through the looking glass of a day and a Church gone-by. I have a special spot in my heart for all that you mentioned—even the saddle oxfords!
There are still and ever-increasing number of habit-wearing sisters teaching (Dominican Sisters that my daughter has felt a bit of a tug toward in Nashville and Ann Arbor…perhaps in more places than that, too). I have witnessed first hand a very strongly-identified Catholic school…more of Catholic community that teaches Latin, Greek, (dead languages have the advantage of people not changing the meaning of the text—that is what I learned when 2 of my 4 went to The Lyceum School in Ohio) the Great Books in the Socratic method of learning. This is not a boast but rather a hope that we will have enough who love and care about the absolute Truth that transcends time will pass the treasury of faith on in multiples.
I have learned from Dietrich and Alice VonHildebrand some beautiful teachings that present what was stripped from some of us…that chapel veil, for example. My daughter began wearning one years ago…I had found some that were mine and my older sisters in my Mom’s (may she rest in peace) drawers. I finally did some checking. One comment that struck me was someone saying that they couldn’t see why they were stopped, so if it was good enough for the Blessed Mother, it was obviously good enough for them. I thought that was a great point, so I went back to wearing one. Soon after, I heard a sharing from Alice VH that things that are sacred are veiled. The tabernacle has a veil. Women are sacred in God’s eyes and should be veiled before Him. She gives many “natural” examples of God’s gift of veiling that which is sacred.
I don’t notice what other women in our Church do because to me this is one way that I can show reverence to my Lord, my God, my King, my Savior!
I have read bits and pieces of what you shared about “concerns” but I probably don’t go to read at as many places as you do because my time is limited. Our Pope Francis is our new Holy Father. I pray, too, that our fractured Church begins to mend.
I agree that all the utter nonsense within should end. You expressed this so beautifully in this last post. May God’s blessings be upon you, keep you rooted in Faith, and all those you love.
cheeriosinmypocket,
Have you not read all the vitriol about how Pope Francis is supposedly such a liberal and will un-do all the “good” that JPII and BXVI did? It seems non-stop these days that there are many who view Francis as suspiciuos because of his Jesuit affiliation and perhaps his being from South America. I can’t pretend to understand it either, but if you haven’t seen or heard this rant, I’d be very surprised since it’s been circulating in many a Catholic media outlet and blog (Rorate Caeli, for example)since he was elected at the Conclave. My concern with the convert and revert crowd is that there seems to be an assumption on their part that cradle Catholics of a certain age, must have all been poorly cathecized. I am offended by this and it seems to be highly prevalent in our American Church today. I do not claim to be “more” Catholic or spiritually stronger than the next. I am a work in progress. However, I did not just arrive at this dance. I worry that my convert and revert friends (and I have many) are longing for something that they’ll never have…the tradition of having grown up Catholic, in strongly-identified Catholic schools, with habit-wearing sisters teaching them, with daily Mass and weekly Confession, with abstaining from meat on all Fridays, with May Crownings, with a working understanding of Latin, with chapel veils, with saddle oxfords, with large families who all knew each other…with all of those things that made us a community. Sometimes I think they wish for that, and I’m afraid it does not exist in that capacity anymore. I’m grateful that all of those things were a part of my childhood. I am grateful that there are new arrivals to the faith who want to carry on the traditions. I simply wish we could have mutual respect and understand that there are many of us who have always been here, who never left to search out something else and who’ve worked hard all these years to remain true to the faith, even when it has been very difficult. I love my Chuch and our new Holy Father. Our Church is terribly fractured and I believe that Francis can help us to mend. I apoplogize if any reader has been offended by what I have written. I was simply trying to defend Pope Francis from what I believe is an unfair account of his intenttions for the Church, by people who do not have the full historical perspective to make sound observations. Peace.
sorry cheerios I never did well with public school graduates or College students who did not take Logic 101 classes. I taught them all. Robot research slaving copying, not thinking or learning how to.
I would like to know more about why Verbinsky of all Argentinians, a confirmed terrorist, was and still is the recipient of millions of US$? Could anyone answer that??
Very interesting article with information I did not see anywhere else. I’m especially curious to know how it is possible that these US groups, Ford Foundation, Soros, and National Endowment for Democracy are promoting a worldwide agenda of hatred. We should all contact these groups and demand that they cut off funding to Verbitsky. I saw he held another press conference with new “documents” against the Pope on Holy Thursday. He could never have gotten this far without these determined, anti-Church organizations.
LoneThinker, You may want to start talking about what you think with someone who understands you. I am sorry, for I am unable to follow your thinking.
God bless you.
MeaCulpa1,
How wonderful that you have been and remained faithful. But, I do not understand what disdain to which you refer…nor even follow the more Catholic than the Pope comment?...what does that mean? It does sound as though you have a grudge against somebody or something. And who isn’t giving him a fair chance? I must be missing something.
The Register also has a new article outlining what one priest (I think) states is our new Pope’s agenda…and the reform of the Priesthood. It is beautifully written, and there appears to be continuity in the liturgical reform from Pope Emeritus to Pope Francis with the connection being a 20th centry theologian, Romano Guardini.
God bless you.
it began with Jesus and does not stop with any Pope. Jesus warned us in JOHN 15 so please do not be surprised. Satan has more cash and tools in his toolkit than Jesus has for now. Evil and Darkness are the absence of Good and Light. Lies are the absence of Truth. They disappear or wear out eventually but they have a long shelf-life.
Let’s put it this way…I was born before Vatican II, remember and love the tradition, grew up on the Baltimore Cathecism, in Baltimore, no less. My take is that most of the disdain is coming from what I call the convert and revert crowd…those who are new to the old ways, those who forget that many of us have been here all along and those who want to be “more Catholic than the Pope.” The beauty of our Church is that there really is room for everyone at the table. That crowd would be wise to remember that Popes come and Popes go, but the faith remains constant. I am hopeful that Francis will indeed “renew my Church.” Please give him a fair chance.
The topic of this article and the comments of each one is very interesting. As someone above mentioned, Jesus went through this and also stated it would happen to us. What did Jesus do when he was accused of all that happened to him? He prayed for them. He was going to die for each one of us. He was going to take away the sins of each one of the children of God. He humbly and lovingly went about His Father’s plan for him. Yes, the accusations about Pope Francis are terrible; however, we need to lift all the people involved is this slander up to God our Father through the power of the Holy Spirit so that Jesus will open their hearts and minds to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We also need to keep Pope Francis in our daily prayers so that he too has the strength, courage, encouragement, love, forgiveness, mercy, and grace from our Lord daily. From what I have read about Pope Francis, I am sure he is humbly praying for each one involved in this scandal. It is not only the Catholic Church that is being slammed; it is all Christians throughout the world who are under attack. So please include every Christian in your prayers daily. I do you. In Christ’s love,
This is an important article responding to the false allegations by the same group of atheistic media manipulators, which so effectively destroyed the good name of Pope Pius XII. After working since 2006 to identify and post on line (at http://www.ptwf.org) documented evidence to reveal the actions of Pope Pius XII, we see identical techniques employed to smear the good name of Pope Francis. The problem is that there will always be an eager group that will pay out good money to encourage writing such books and the naïve who believe these baseless allegations. Verbitsky is just another Hochhuth.
Morning Prayer for Holy Thursday included Ps 79(80)and Ps 80(81).
I think these are à propos.
There can be no toleration of socialist propaganda. It only takes people to be silent for lies to flourish.
“Horacio Verbitsky’s obsessive attempts to harm Pope Francis are audacious; that he receives financial support from American institutions is even more shocking.”
Unfortunately, this is the one fact that does not surprise me in the least.
LoneThinker…what on earth are you talking about? Why do you think that Latinists as you call them should exit? Who are you to judge whether or not they, too, believe Peter’s response and being committed to Jesus, who has the words of eternal life? I believe you may be way off base. How old are you?
meaculpa1, I don’t know how old you are, but forgive those who are concerned. I agree that comments from any sphere at this time should be out of love for the Holy Father. But the comments I’ve heard or seen, I’ve tried to put into perspective of what really is important at this moment in time and not adherence to clothing ceremonial or not. The most important concern was that some real and I mean real left-wing persons were quite excited about our Pope Francis being the choice of the Holy Spirit. But, again, forgive them. They have had a difficult time for 50 years or so.
BXV1 gave the Latinists every break. Time for them to exit gently and not let the huge Doors of a Generous Mother Church crush them as they leave with the compassion Jesus showed when HE asked the John 6 crowd if they wanted to leave also. PETER answered for all of us committed to JESUS who with PETER and his successors say YOU ARE THE CHRIST THE SON OF THE LIVING GOD. There is nowhere or no one else-YOU HAVE THE WORDS OF ETERNAL LIFE. Not the Bible alone not Luther not Pentecostalism not anti-Vatican 11 Sede Vacante-ists. And certainly not any political, economic or NGO or Community Organisers regardless of Left or Right bent. JESUS’ BODY, His Church, messy yes but look at the shattered alternatives lying on the side of the road and in History’s Trash Heap.
While most of us take these stories of his alleged involvement in the Dirty Wars with a grain of salt, what I think is hugely more damaging to our Holy Father’s reputation is the criticism from the so-called “traditional” elements inside our Church that lament over Bergoglio’s supposed “lefty” ways…his being a (gasp) Jesuit, his love for the poor, his supposed aversion to TLM and all things ceremonial. To hear these folks and their fervent disdain for Pope Francis is disheartening and unfair, at the very least.
Pope Francis must have the making of a great Pope if the evil one is on the attack from the moment of the his election
For Catholic journalists and educators, this article is great advice. But there are two types of dialogue. The first type is what journalists or educators do with open minded people. But in the secular world these issues seldom come up, except by someone with an opinion and an agenda (non-open minded). This type of dialogue is almost always a loosing cause. Jesus is met with this type of dialogue by Pilate, and shows the way to handle it. “My kingdom does not belong to this world. If my kingdom did belong to this world, my attendants [would] be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not here.” Focus on building up the Kingdom.
@Stillbelieve: I just heard another story abt. Dr. Carson a minute ago on Megan Kelley’s show. I also heard him at the “breakfast” with Pres. Obama. I admire him and applaud him and if he should run for Pres., he has my vote. I could care less abt. the color of anyone’s skin.
Also I am very interested in the article above, because of the Argentinian neighbor I have who told me, when I first met her, how she “hated the Pope & the Cath. Church. Because of what she said, I read about the “dirty war”. When Pope Francis was declared our new Pope, she was proud and ecstatic over it. You figure…....Hoping she really will believe the truth.
I think that the main goal of the falsehood was already achieved. (although I thank the author for his great article and research) The goal of the original story was never to accurately recount any historical facts about our Spiritual Father, but rather to insure that the uniformed will have a negative view of the Pope. I was watching one of the big three on my computer at work (ABC,CBS,or NBC, I’m not sure) with the sound off and not 5 seconds after the announcement of our new Vicar a banner with this “story” appeared under his picture. The story served its purpose, a way to defame the church to the uninformed. propaganda pure and simple, but now its out there, accepted as fact, will we ever see a retraction or articles like this on those same media sources that were so quick to put Verbitsky dribble ?? Nope. God Bless The Pope and the universal Church..
these people should stop casting stones, and think on there sins first.
Kudos to each writer. My simple comments are 1. Earthy, they do not kick dead dogs. 2. Bible. John 15; Jesus said they did it to ME, they will do it to you-unless you are a compromiser and tag along with the Satan crowd.
What is scary is what is going on in our own country. The HHS mandate, Obama Care provisions, ousting Catholic groups from participating in charitable activities because of its opposition to homosexuality and abortion, the abandonment of DOMA and now the liberal media and government efforts to redefine marriage as a ‘civil right’ are not accidents. The liberals and socialists (there I said it straight out) are merely setting the stage by enshrining these things in the law so when the CC refuses to comply based upon religious beliefs and conscience it can be punished both financially and legally.
The persecution of the CC is well underway.
It is an old, old strategy that the despicable terrorists of Argentina practised. Goad the military into atrocities and fascism. They were very much to blame for what followed. The leader of the ‘Mothers of the Lost’, even today, is a spittle-flecked raging ‘Marxist from Hell’ herself. She caught the prevailing currents and said something nice about Pope Francis and his concern for the poor - it was smart of her.
Very good article. However, I think you are wrong in claiming all attacks against Francis stem fromn Verbitsky. There are others who are accusing him of various things, such as the baby stealing charge (which is ludicrous) and charges that he did not move quickly enough on sex abuse charges. However, everyone agrees he later became very strong on that. So, Its not just Verbitsky, there are a handful of dedicated socialists out there that have it in for him.
Interesting article; researched well. It reminded me of something - the Democrats attacks on Republicans with support from the liberal media. The only time they seemed to stop their attacks was for a couple months after 9-11; they seemed like REAL Americans for a change. But then they slowly picked it up again and have been in full stride ever since. Yep, that’s another sin Democrats are committing all the time - giving false witness. Their latest target - Dr. Carson, a successful professional, a medical doctor whose thinking is not in line with the leftist Democrat Party. So, this is another good man who has stepped forward that they have to destroyed.
It started with JESUS so why get excited. GMB was ordained in 1969 so go figure that he could not have been in cahoots with the Junta at that stage of his priesthood even as SJ provincial.
The Prince of this world in many ways controls the secular media so his agents only do their fathers bidding and take on the nature of their father.
I don’t need to read every detail of this article about “exonerating” anyone.
We all should know by now that the secular media and this secular world we live in hates the Catholic Church and will do everything in its power to marginalize and destroy it.
Why do we continually give these attacks any attention any more at all. Just as they ignore all the good the church does, we should ignore their lies and stop “protesting too much” when we hear them. I’ve come to expect the attacks and have learned there’s little to be accomplished by defending them. All that does is keep the accusations going on and on, spreading the slander.
Thanks for the article. Two things come immediately to mind. The first is, and my husband laughs at me when I say this, that I am real leary of any “foundation” from now on because it usually means mega bucks being given to a deplorable cause. Rockefellar (sp?), Ford, Carnegie…which or how many of these have backed the eugenics beginnings following the civil war? Interestingly, Hitler was quite interested in eugenics and Margaret Sangor(founder of Planned Parenthood). Second, for such an outdated, declining Church, there is no other religion during the past 50 years who has taken slam after slam, hit after hit, bomb after bomb from socialists, relativists, atheists, agnostics, feminists, ACLUists, radical “progressives” (and I use that “term” lightly), etc., etc., etc. The remnant will remain…Christ Jesus, Victor! Christ Jesus, Ruler! Christ Jesus, Lord and Redeemer! The gates of hell shall not prevail against Her (The Holy Roman Catholic Church).
One priest in the Diocese of Rochester NY was only too happy to repeat this slander to a Gannett Newspaper (Rochester Democrat & Chronicle) reporter seeking reactions from clergy the day of the Pope’s election. In printed comments, the priest stated that “even if [the accusations] were true,” the Pope’s “reactionary conservative background” wouldn’t “necessarily” determine what type of Pope he would be. Please pray that Pope Francis will select a holy Bishop for our Diocese, which is currently without a Bishop.
Excellent article. Verbitsky is an embittered former terrorist. His lies have been broadly exposed, even though manifesto rags like the New York Times are happy to propagate those lies.
