MIAMI — Tom Peterson, founder of Catholics Come Home, announced that his Catholic evangelization organization will be airing a new national television commercial featuring retired college football coach Lou Holtz during college football week and ending with the BCS National Championship (Notre Dame vs. Alabama) on Jan. 7. The 30-second ad features Coach Holtz delivering a half-time “pep-talk” reminding viewers to keep focused on life’s goal: heaven.

“Faith is not a spectator’s sport; it must be lived. … It’s interactive,” said Peterson in a press release. “We’re trying a creative game plan, with the goal of winning loyal fans for Jesus and the Church.”

The Nazi slaughter of the Jews in Poland, Germany and Czechoslovakia was well under way in February 1939, when Cardinal Eugenio Pacelli assumed the papacy, taking the name Pius XII. Horrified as he surely was by what was happening throughout Europe, it was his judgment that public denunciation of the persecution “would inevitably provoke further reprisals against the Jews,” according to Gordon Thomas in The Pope’s Jews.

The furor over Pius’ alleged “silence” that has occupied the public’s attention for decades has...READ MORE

Contraception Mandate Kicks In for Wave of Employers (4125)

The battle over religious freedom intensifies as the controversial federal contraception mandate goes into effect for many for-profit employers.

01/04/2013 Comments (12)

WASHINGTON — The battle over religious freedom is intensifying as the controversial federal contraception mandate goes into effect for many for-profit employers at the start of the new year.

“We shouldn’t have to give up our First Amendment rights to make a living,” said Maureen Ferguson, senior policy adviser for The Catholic Association, which seeks to bring a faithful Catholic voice to the public square.

Ferguson told Catholic News Agency on Jan. 3 that employers who did not win a court order blocking the mandate are now “placed in a horrible position, choosing between their livelihood and their faith.”

On Jan. 1, 2013, new employee health-insurance plans began for many companies...READ MORE

LONDON — The Archdiocese of Westminster has designated the historic Our Lady of the Assumption parish in London to a group of former Anglicans who have joined the Church and are known as an ordinariate.

“I hope that the use of this beautiful church ... will enable Catholics in the ordinariate to prosper and to offer to others the particular gifts of the ordinariate,” Archbishop Vincent Nichols announced Jan. 2.

For six years, the parish has hosted biweekly “Soho Masses” that are organized for the attendance of "gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered" Catholics in London. The group responsible for the Masses is now meant to “focus their effort on the provision of pastoral care” for...READ MORE

WASHINGTON — An online petition asking the White House to designate the Catholic Church as a “hate group” for its views on marriage is drawing criticism for generating unjust animosity.

The petition reveals an “underlying agenda,” which is not simply to prevent violent crimes, but to “stigmatize any disapproval of homosexuality at all and essentially to silence us,” said Peter Sprigg, senior fellow for policy studies at the Family Research Council in Washington.

He explained to Catholic News Agency on Jan. 3 that applying the “hate group” label to organizations that are morally opposed to redefining marriage is simply “name-calling designed to cut us out of the public debate.”

Disturbing trends of violence in society require policy examinations and cultural changes, said three committee leaders of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

NEWTOWN, Conn. — Disturbing trends of violence in society should prompt both policy examinations and cultural changes, said committee leaders of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

“It is time for our nation to renew a culture of life in our society,” said Bishop Stephen Blaire of Stockton, Calif., Bishop John Wester of Salt Lake City and Bishop Kevin Rhoades of Fort Wayne-South Bend, Ind.

The bishops, who respectively lead the U.S. bishops' Committees on Domestic Justice and Human Development, Communications and Laity, Marriage, Family Life and Youth, released a Dec. 21 statement responding to a recent mass shooting.

They urged a reconsideration of national firearm policies,...READ MORE
