Publishing the English translation of the new Roman Missal is a once-in-a-generation undertaking that has drawn the assistance of a record number of seven publishers across the United States.

The most significant change to the text of the Mass since the Second Vatican Council has been years in the making.

“It’s a little bit daunting,” said John Thomas, director of Liturgy Training Publications, which is owned by the Archdiocese of Chicago.

For all but two of the publishers — Catholic Book Publishing Corp. and Liturgical Press — this is the first time they have come out with an English edition of the altar Missal. The text was the same for all, but each publisher added distinctive...READ MORE

VATICAN CITY (EWTN News/CNA)—At a Mass for those cardinals and bishops who have died during the last year, Pope Benedict XVI said that the promise of the resurrection rests only on Christ and not any sort of naturalistic power.

Pope Benedict began his Nov. 3 homily in St. Peter’s Basilica by noting that Christ’s victory over death was foreshadowed eight centuries beforehand by the prophet Hosea.

He said that the writings of Hosea were “deeply impressed on the heart and mind of Jesus,” who would quote from them and, in the case of Hosea 6:2, actually live it out. In that passage, Hosea predicted that God “will revive us after two days; on the third day he will raise us up, to live in his...READ MORE

Immunization of Boys Against HPV: Neither Sound Ethics Nor Sound Public Policy (3016)

On Oct. 25, 2011, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommended that all 11- and 12-year-old boys be routinely vaccinated against human papillomavirus (HPV). This questionable decision should make Catholics re-examine the issue of HPV immunization and redouble their efforts to build a culture of life, particularly in matters of health and health care. A little history is in order to put this decision into proper context.

In June 2006, the ACIP recommended routine immunization of girls against HPV to reduce rates of cervical cancer among women. About 12,000 women in the U.S. get cervical cancer each year, and HPV, a sexually transmitted disease (STD), is the main cause...READ MORE

WASHINGTON (EWTN News)—New guidelines for Mass celebration do not discourage laypersons’ reception of holy Communion under the forms of both bread and wine, contrary to early reports about a change in practice.

“In recent weeks, there have been questions regarding current liturgical law for the United States in offering holy Communion under both kinds to the faithful during Mass,” wrote Archbishop Gregory Aymond, chairman of the U.S. bishops’ Secretariat for Divine Worship, in an Oct. 26 letter to the country’s Catholic hierarchy.

“In light of these questions,” he stated, “it is hoped that the following clarifications will prove helpful.”

The letter goes on to explain that the 2011...READ MORE

WASHINGTON (EWTN News)—The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a resolution reaffirming the United States’ official motto: “In God We Trust.”

The non-binding resolution, introduced by Rep. J. Randy Forbes, R-Va., passed by a vote of 396 to 9. It encourages the motto’s public display “in all public buildings, public schools and other government institutions.”

“Today, as in other times of division and difficulty in our nation’s history, the House of Representatives again reaffirmed ‘In God We Trust’ as our official motto and, in so doing, provided clarity amidst a cloud of confusion about our nation’s spiritual heritage and offered inspiration to an American people that face challenges...READ MORE
