Vatican Spiritual Exercises

Nigerian Cardinal Francis Arinze will preach this year’s spiritual exercises at the Vatican’s Lenten retreat.

Cardinal Arinze retired earlier this year from his post as prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments.

The retreat, attended by Pope Benedict XVI and officials of the Roman Curia, will take place March 1-7.

The theme of the meditations will be “The Priest Encounters Christ and Follows Him.”

During the retreat, Zenit explains in this article, the Pope suspends all his meetings and audiences to dedicate himself entirely to prayer. It’s a useful reminder that despite all his many other responsibilities as the Vicar of Christ, the Holy Father’s first priority remains the same as that of every faithful bishop and priest: prayer.
