There a signs of a big pro-marriage shift in California.
The Yes side is surging ahead in the campaign over the state’s Proposition 8, a ballot initiative to amend the state constitution to define marriage as a one-man, one-woman institution.
A poll conducted Oct. 4-5 by four California TV stations found the Yes side ahead 47%-42%, the San Jose Mercury News reported Oct. 7.
That’s up sharply from a Sept. 25 poll that reported the No side was leading 49%-44%.
The surge came in the wake of TV ads aired by supporters of the amendment, which would outlaw same-sex “marriage.”
The California Supreme Court legalized such unions this spring, overturning a state ban on homosexual “marriage” instituted in 2000 through a referendum that defined civil marriage as between one man and one woman.
The Yes side in the Proposition 8 campaign is benefiting from a jump in donations that has given it a substantial fundraising edge, Associated Press reported Oct. 6.
More than 60,000 people have contributed to the $25.4 million that has been donated to the ProtectMarriage.com organization.
Opponents of Proposition 8 have raised $15.8.
The Knights of Columbus are the largest donors to the Yes campaign, having donated $1.2 million to the cause.
