Say, What's a "Fertilized Egg" Anyway?

Right now there are 356 mentions of “fertilized eggs” in the news, according to a quick Google News search, due to the Personhood amendment being voted on in Mississippi.

You see, a fertilized egg to you, me, and anyone with a brain is called an embryo.

As David Schmidt of Live Action points out, “Well there is no such thing as a fertilized human egg. Once a human egg is fertilized, it is no longer an egg but rather called a human zygote or human embryo.”

But that doesn’t stop the media from continuously calling an embryo a “fertilized egg.” In fact the terms “embryo” in related articles has about 1/3 the news mentions as “fertilized egg.” That’s a rout, folks. The media has found a term to their liking and “embryo” loses again. (Like always. Man, embryos can’t catch a break.)

And pro-lifers are the anti-science types? It’s not like we’re asking the media to call it a “teeny tiny cutesy human.” We’re just asking for the actual scientific term of embryo. What’s so hard about that? But I guess embryo sounds too much like teeny tiny human being, so opponents of the unborn prefer to call them fertilized eggs.

Some of the media reports would be hilarious…if they weren’t actually talking about killing human beings…which they are.

The Washington Post reported the personhood amendment in Mississippi this way:

A rebel anti-abortion movement gaining momentum nationwide is hoping for its first electoral victory Tuesday, when Mississippi voters will decide whether to designate a fertilized egg as a person and potentially label its destruction an act of murder.

Rebels? Hey, isn’t rebels what they called Al Qaeda in Iraq? (Except I think the media liked them more than they like us pro-lifers.)

CBS reported:

CBS News correspondent Randall Pinkston has more reports that, with religious conviction, Les Riley led the petition drive to put “Personhood” on the Mississippi ballot, which would declare that a fertilized egg is a person.

Yeah, Les is the one driven by religious conviction. But not the media?

It’s, of course, not just the media getting something wrong. Look, when it’s over 350 articles getting it wrong in exactly the same way, I start thinking there’s marching orders coming from somewhere.

Don’t think so?

The obfuscation on life issues are prevalent. Here’s former President Bill Clinton saying he thinks people will come around on the issue of embryonic stem cell research as long as the embryos aren’t fertilized. Or something.

Do you really for a second think that Bill Clinton doesn’t know the intricacies of how women get pregnant? Come on. Do you really think a President of the United States is that misinformed about the science?

Well, even if you believe that, how about the fact that Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN’s Chief Medical Correspondent, didn’t even correct Clinton on this idiotic statement.

In fact, CNN had an article just this week entitled, Mississippi gov. supports amendment to declare fertilized egg a person.

Even Fox News, you know, the supposedly conservative news channel, had this headline:
“Push to Declare a Fertilized Egg a ‘Person’ Offers New Tack on Abortion Debate.”

I used to be an atheist (or maybe just a punky agnostic on second thought) but I was always pro-life. It just never made sense to me that a baby wasn’t a baby. I’m pretty simple like that. But even after I became a practicing Catholic (or maybe a punky Catholic) I kinda’ sorta’ believed that opponents of life didn’t really know what they were doing. They knew not what they did and all. And that’s pretty scary in and of itself. But this coordinated obfuscation is just another horrendous sign that the opponents of life know exactly what they’re doing. And that, to me, is even scarier.

Sincerely,
Matt Archbold, Fertilized Egg
