On today's Register Radio, Philadelphia Archbishop Charles J. Chaput spoke about his recent e-book "A Heart on Fire: Catholic Witness and the Next America" and the challenges facing our nation.

Archbishop Chaput described his reaction to the Supreme Court's recent decision on Obamacare.

"The initial reaction I experienced was surprise and disappointment, but I've seen a re-energized resolve to protect our religious freedom," said Archbishop Chaput. "We're still committed to overturning the mandates of Health and Human Services."

Asked about the Church's involvement in what some have described as partisan politics, Archbishop Chaput explained that the "Catholic Church has for decades supported the conect that healthcare should be available to everyone. We didn't pick this fight. We're surprised that it's taking place during an election year."

Using a description by St. Augustine, Archbishop Chaput spoke about the true meaning of freedom.

"The most important thing we need to understand is how our country is changing," said Archbishop Chaput. "We cannot take for granted that we will always have religious freedom. How will we stand up for what the Gospel asks of us?"

Society of St. Pius X

In the second half of our program, Dan Burke spoke with the Register's Rome correspondent Edward Pentin about the Church's efforts of reconciliation with the Society of Saint Pius X, and about recent appointments made at the Vatican.

"The point of contention seems to be whether the Society must adhere to all of the teachings of the Second Vatican Council," explained Pentin. "Archbishop Augustine DiNoia has said that the Council is dogmatic, so the ball appears to be in the Society's court to find a way to reconcile. Talks, for the moment, seem to be at a standstill, so it's looking less optimistic and positive."

In addition, Pentin spoke about recent appointments made to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Pontifical Council for the Family, the Secretary for Divine Worship, and the Vatican's new communication advisor, Greg Burke, a former Rome Register correspondent.
