Watch the embedded video of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, and you’ll see that she makes yet another Catholic blunder in her remarks trying to say that Catholics, specifically religious sisters, are supportive of the healthcare reform bill.
She says that today, March 19, is the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker. While today is the Feast of St. Joseph, most Catholics would recognize that the Church’s official Feast for St. Joseph the Worker comes later in the year, on May 1st.
Perhaps that’s another fact that she was mistaught by the School Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, whom she mentions in her remarks. In the video, she says that the School Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, and “every order you can think of was there saying that they want us to pass this life affirming legislation.”
Pelosi should be the poster-child for Catholic school miseducation. Recall the other things that she hasn’t been taught.
In August 2008, Pelosi told “Meet the Press” that the Catholic position on human life only developed over the past 50 years and that no one can tell you when human life begins.
At least six bishops responded to Pelosi’s statements. One of them was Denver’s Archbishop Charles Chaput.
“...from the beginning, the believing Christian community held that abortion was always, gravely wrong,” responded Archbishop Charles Chaput. “...we now know with biological certainty exactly when human life begins. Abortion kills an unborn, developing human life. It is always gravely evil, and so are the evasions employed to justify it. Catholics who make excuses for it - whether they’re famous or not - fool only themselves and abuse the fidelity of those Catholics who do sincerely seek to follow the Gospel and live their Catholic faith.”

Well said, Tim. Sometimes you have to wonder what actually goes on in people like this to avoid listening to the truth. The Pope, her bishop, Archbishop Chaput, etc. It’s as if she doesn’t even see she’s beyond left field! I think Frederick II would have to compete to keep up with her kind of logic, unfortunately. It’s people like these that need the best of our prayers, as it were.
Know your orders before you speak: Though Pelosi was wrong, and is wrong-headed on issues related to human life, she does know her religious orders. She mentions both the “School Sisters of Notre Dame” and the order of “Notre Dame de Namur,” two separate orders that taught her. She did a good job of correcting her original misstatement conflating the two. Too bad Tim Drake didn’t take a minute to look this up.
I know for a fact that I was taught for six years (grades 7-12) by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, foundress Saint Julie Billiart. Back in those days, they were tough cookies and very strict.
What can you expect from someone who did her own spin to the rebuff she received from the Pope? This woman also has written inher book about her granddaughter being excited to receive First Holy Communion and how Pelosi can’t believe that her granddaughter bought into the lie of it being truly Christ! This woman is what some of us call CINO, catholic in name only. She is an embarrasement and a detriment to our faith.
I personally think she should be excommunicated for her strident disobedience to her church. She constantly pushes for anti-life legislation and could care less for her Church’s teachings unless it promotes her agenda and the Progressive Left. I have another idea. The Episcopal Church is losing so many people lately, maybe she could go there because we don’t need the dead wood. They have abortion, contraception,gay marriage,“social justice agenda:Socialism”,women bishops and priests. It’s Heaven for Nancy. I pray for her and all Catholics who are outside the Church’s teachings. It’s not too late to come home. May God bring all wayward Catholics home. Amen
There is no such group as the “School Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur.” I was taught by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur and the School Sisters of Notre Dame. Both were excellent teachers and deeply spiritual women. But, as a teacher myself, I know it is often true that what a student learns is not what I taught.
