Mayflower Crosses the Tiber

Want to know the real reason for the widely abused and misunderstood concept of the separation of Church and State?

America was founded by those fleeing state imposed religion.  Many of those fleeing this oppression left jolly old England. If there remains any in England of the same spunk as the pilgrims of yore, they would be loading up the Mayflower right about now.

Opposition to the ordination of female Bishops has been growing within the Anglican General Synod.  Some Members of Parliament are afraid that the Synod might, in line with 2,000 years of Christian doctrine, reject female Episcopal Ordination.  Well they just cannot have that!

A group of influential MPs will tomorrow call for Parliament to intervene over the historic reform as fears grow that the Church will reject plans allowing female bishops.

The cross-party group, including former ministers Frank Field and Stephen Timms, and Simon Hughes, the deputy leader of the Liberal Democrats, is concerned that the General Synod, the Church’s parliament, may not pass legislation designed to end the glass ceiling for women clergy.

Traditionalists believe that a rise in the number of opponents of female priests to the Synod has improved their chances of blocking the law, which can only pass if it receives a two-thirds majority in the houses of laity, clergy and bishops.

Many of them feel that the current legislation does not provide sufficient concessions to those who cannot accept women as bishops.

However, Mr Field has tabled an early day motion, which could abolish the Church’s current exemption from equality laws relating to gender discrimination and ultimately force it to consecrate women.

The State wants to dictate to the Church what its teaching must be.  This is why there must be a separation of Church and State, it is the State that cannot be trusted.

You know, it just struck me that there is a group with the same spunk and courage as the pilgrims of yore, fleeing the oppression of a that State religion.  But instead of crossing the Atlantic this time, they are crossing the Tiber.
