In the lead up to the Synod, we have had to endure many dumb things said by those trying to justify changes to immutable teaching. We have had those who have tried to change history, or put God's mercy in opposition to His Justice. You know the drill.
But leave it to an Assistant Theology professor at Catholic *ahem* Villanova to say the single dumbest thing so far about marriage.
Katie Grimes, writing at "Women In Theology" gives this advice to the Bishops in advance of the Synod.
Bishops ought to also listen to those critics who point out that marriage also accords disproportionate benefits to the well to do. Marriage, they claim, is not just about sex and love and children and stability, it is also about acquiring and transmitting wealth. Put another way, heterosexually married white and upper-middle class Catholics who follow all facets of magisterial sexual morality perpetuate social injustice not just in the political or economic spheres but also through their sex lives.
Did all you hetersexual white folk following Catholic teaching know that you are oppressing poor people?
Yup, fer realz. Following Jesus while being white oppresses people.
I think it is time for a completely random and totally unrelated Bible quote, don't you?
Let's see, the wheel landed on 1 Timothy 2:12
"A woman must quietly receive instruction with entire submissiveness. But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet. For it was Adam who was first created, and then Eve.…"
Put that in your oppressive pipe and smoke it, sister!
