Archbishop Gregory Aymond (CNS)

Archbishop-elect Gregory Aymond of New Orleans will become the archdiocese’s first native-born archbishop when he is installed Aug. 20.

Go here to read the article posted about Archbishop Aymond by the New Orleans Times-Picayune on Friday, the day Pope Benedict XVI appointed him to succeed retiring Archbishop Alfred Hughes.

With Archbishop Aymond’s appointment, New Orleans now holds a unique distinction, the Times-Picayune notes: “Aymond’s appointment means that New Orleans seems about to become the only American city with four living archbishops: Aymond, Hughes, [retired Archbishop Philip] Hannan and retired Archbishop Francis Schulte.”
