Nun of the Above

Thursday, March 18, 2010 11:00 AM Comments (4)

Great damage was done to the pro-life movement yesterday with the endorsement of the Senate healthcare plan by nearly 60 Catholic sisters.

With the future of the healthcare bill in question, in rode the habit-less cavalry of sisters to the rescue. The damage done is difficult to gauge but the endorsement has been trumpeted by news sources more than the original statement of opposition from the bishops. This letter and the ensuing media firestorm will certainly dispirit pro-lifers and confuse the faithful. Many of the news reports I’ve seen have erroneously tended to portray the nuns as an equal voice to the bishops, citing a “split” in the Catholic Church.

The sisters point to the many...READ MORE

Did You Hear About Healthcare at Mass?

Monday, March 15, 2010 11:09 AM Comments (74)

The USCCB came out strongly against the current healthcare bill which is now being considered by the House of Representatives. You wouldn’t know this from the mainstream media coverage which has been too busy reporting (celebrating?) that the Catholic Health Association endorsed the healthcare plan.

The bishops did, however, put out a bulletin insert on March 11th asking Catholics to contact their elected representatives and urge them to protect life. The banner of the insert reads: “Stop Abortion Funding in Health Care Reform! Protect Conscience. Ensure Affordable Health Coverage. Allow Immigrants to Purchase Private Health Insurance.”

The text reads:

“As long-time advocates of health...READ MORE

Big Abortion Is Scared

Tuesday, March 09, 2010 11:13 AM Comments (10)

Big Abortion is scared. They’re scared to death that America is slowly trending towards life. They’re scared of the hundreds of thousands of people who march on Washington every year. They’re scared of the wonderful, prayerful and effective 40 Days for Life vigils outside abortion clinics across the country. But mostly they’re scared of science.

So they’ve sought to silence pro-lifers. Heck, they’ve trained the media as their attack dogs so well that we’re not even called pro-lifers. We’re anti-abortionists. Big Abortion has sought to legally institute bubble zones and “no speech” zones around clinics. They try to mocking the effectiveness of abstinence to diminish it. They desperately...READ MORE

Man Made Limbo

Thursday, March 04, 2010 11:15 AM Comments (16)

God may or may not have created limbo so man, always eager to improve on God’s work, created it. Due to the widespread use of In Vitro Fertilization of which the Church does not approve, hundreds of thousands of “spare” or “extra” embryos now exist in a man-made refrigerated limbo.

This is nothing short of a horror. And of course, the natural question that comes to mind is: Can they be rescued? While our instincts to preserve life might make the answer seem easy, it isn’t. According to Church teaching keeping the embryos frozen, implanting them in a woman’s womb, and destroying them are all immoral responses to a terrible situation.

Dignitas Personae, the CDF’s 2008 instructions on...READ MORE

A Sherpa's Guide to Heaven

Monday, March 01, 2010 11:00 AM Comments (3)

I didn’t want to be a father. It wasn’t that I had anything against kids. I just didn’t understand the whole melting oooh and aaaaah thing that people did around children.

It’s not that I was against having children. It’s what people seemed to do when they grew up so I figured that at some point I would probably procreate but it was just not something I thought would be all that big of a deal to me. I knew I’d accept the responsibility of loving my children and educating them. I knew it would change what I did but I never expected it to change who I was.

But the real reason I didn’t want to have children was that I didn’t want to become a Tenzing Norgay. You see, everyone knows Sir...READ MORE

Who Wants Elton's Jesus?

Monday, February 22, 2010 1:30 PM Comments (5)

Elton John recently said that Jesus was a gay genius.

Now, Elton’s theological ramblings aren’t to be taken too seriously but I think that there’s a lot of Elton Johns out there. By that I don’t mean there’s millions of flamboyant rockers with funny sunglasses. But I do think it’s rather telling that Elton sees Jesus as a homosexual and a genius as Elton himself is a homosexual and could easily be called a musical genius. Weird, huh?

I don’t think Elton is alone in this kind of thinking. I think people often see Jesus in a narrow way, as a reflection of themselves.

While we’re supposed to see God in others, I think that too often we look for God in ourselves, for reaffirmation of our...READ MORE

Equality vs. Christianity

Thursday, February 18, 2010 12:04 PM Comments (16)

Everyone talks about equality. But equality only exists in the eyes of God and is, after all, a rather Christian concept. We are all loved by God and in that is our worth. Ironically, many politicians are marginalizing religion from the public sphere in the name of equality. And many see the major obstacle to this enforced equality as Christianity.

Right now, homosexual advocates are marching under the banner of equality. And advancing quite well thank you very much. In fact, just this week the Archdiocese of Washington fell victim to the cause of enforced equality.

The Archdiocese just posted on its website that it’s dropping its foster care program as well as adoption program due to...READ MORE

Pre-Natal Child Abuse

Monday, February 15, 2010 2:10 PM Comments (8)

Have you heard of “Crack Mom?” No? Her case might be one of the most important in the country right now.

A Kentucky woman who the press has dubbed “Crack Mom” faces up to 10 years after pleading guilty to endangering her child’s life by using cocaine during pregnancy, The Kentucky State Journal reports.

But deciding her fate isn’t that simple because the Kentucky Supreme Court heard a similar case in December and a ruling is expected shortly on whether it’s possible to legally abuse a child in the womb.

It’s always amazed me that people look down their nose at women who smoke while pregnant while advocating her right to actually kill her unborn baby.

This case could possibly go all...READ MORE
