More News from the Country that Used to be England

Tuesday, May 04, 2010 3:00 AM Comments (25)

Where to begin?  Where to begin?

Well, after yesterday’s bit on the ongoing derangement of the man who used to be Phillip Pullman (there’s something deeply corrosive to the intellect in all this New Atheist stuff.  It turns finely honed minds and brilliant imaginations into bag ladies who scream at the traffice of bores on park benches who turn every conversation back to the focus of their monomania), today we have more evidence that England is in the final stages of a sort of cultural senile dementia.  Time used to be that England was the country where every religion was equally superior to the Catholic Faith (aka “Romanism” or “Popery”).  That, of course, still holds.  But increasingly, it’s also becoming the country where all religions are equally superior to Christianity.

Case in point, this poor schlep who made the grave mistake of saying that homosexual practice is a sin while not being a Muslim.  The gay cop who busted him is, of course, completely impartial and well qualified to protect Britons from ThoughtCrime.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in Old Blighty, a judge decreed that if you are an Evangelical (or any other Christian) who declines to offer marriage counseling to gay people who pretend to be married, then you can get canned because, hey!, your faith is has not basis in factual evidence, is purely subjective, and therefore has not standing whatsoever in a court of law.  So much for the demonstrations of St. Thomas, the historical evidence for the Resurrection, and the entire documented history of the Church.

Meanwhile, what is not purely subjective is… the feelings and desires of gay people at this moment (until the denizens of this highly promiscuous culture move on to new partners.  So, in the Land that Used to Be England, whatever your groin is saying at the moment is factual, while 2000 years of Christian civilization is “subjective” and insubstantial.

This does not mean that England is about to disappear in a puff of relativism, however.  Relativism doesn’t work that way.  Get rid of the Big Laws, says Chesterton, and you don’t get freedom.  You don’t even get anarchy.  You get the small laws.

Case in point:

A [UK] pensioner who put up a red, white and blue election poster telling voters to kick out MPs was accused of racism by police.

After being inundated by canvassing politcians, Roy Newman, 74, decided to tell other voters: ‘GET THE LOT OUT.’

But 90 minutes after he put up the homemade sign up in an upstairs room at his house, two police officers arrived and threatened with arrest. (...)

He said : ‘Three years ago vandals put a brick through my window and when I called the police all they offered me was a crime reference number.

‘Put up a poster and a police car with two uniformed officers arrives quick as a flash - it’s unbelievable.’

Question the Regime and the Regime will not be all squishy and tolerant.  The Regime will brand you and treat you like a criminal.

Today, England.  Tomorrow, the Anglosphere.

Britain has become great with its philosophy ” Eat, mate and die” These are the only activities many of them can think of.They are advised to live for sex. That is why some of the politicians are thinking of lowering the age of consent to16 Why 16 ? Let it be 1 or 2 when the child is capable of walking. Funny Britains ! Funny politics !  Now with the above three activities they added “Destroy Christianity” They want to take the world to the past barbarian times

This has been coming for years, it makes me sick, and the US is not far behind. I feel sorry for my kids and everyone else.

Do not loose hope my brothers, it is saints this world needs.  Each of us has the potential to cure the culture if we respond to the Lord’s request… Take up your cross and follow after me.  As a young person of this generation, I look to the growing pro-life movement as evidence that some of us are not willing to immorality win the day.  May God be glorified by our lives. He has the power to redeem our Nation and Europe as well.  Will we respond, or is the sacrifice too great?

If there really is a devil prowling the world seeking the ruin of souls, he could have done a lot worse than to tempt damaged people into indulging their homosexual impulses en masse while patiently working to position the “gay lifestyle” as a positive social movement, a moral good and a political force. Nothing mocks the sacredness of the marital act, and therefore the natural creation of new human life, quite so nastily as buggery. Nothing turns love of neighbor on its head like state-enforced “tolerance.” And nothing has gone further to compromise the moral authority of Christ’s Church than the generations of gay men who in the second half of the 20th century infiltrated the priesthood, mined its office for access to teenage boys, and cashed in on political correctness to keep bishops, parents and other concerned laypeople at bay (“What, us homophobes? Never”). Is there a devil in these details?

America is not far behind!

I can’t believe what a nasty page this has become. When I was studying Theology at Bristol University (England), New Advent had a wealth of research material on Patristics. What has happened? Now we just get scurrilous gossip. Is this really Christian?

“Case in point, this poor schlep who made the grave mistake of saying that homosexual practice is a sin while not being a Muslim.  The gay cop who busted him is, of course, completely impartial and well qualified to protect Britons from ThoughtCrime.”

That’s not thought crime. And according to the current English laws, no one can discriminate against anyone’s sexuality. That man knew it, and he blew it. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t follow the Lord Jesus Christ.

Jim Roth, don’t feel sorry for your kids. When they’re old enough to be the governing class, the generation in charge of this stuff will be dead. It’s following the example of its parents: rebel. Only in the case of the generation coming of age, it’s a rebellion back into conformity, since that’s the only possible kind of rebellion worthy of the name.

All of this “stuff and nonsense” is going to hit the wall one of these days. Whether it will be through Global Warming…a stray asteroid..war..earthquake..or whatever unknown happening..ALL of this tripe is going to hit the wall..and THEN..people will be running and falling on their knees in the streets..begging God to save them..(WHAT God..?).
Now, please recall..they don’t “BELIEVE” in God.
So..Where are they going..and WHY….?
Whatever..I am not joining the sheeple in the destruction. I may die under the jail for being who I am..and not participating in the “fun and games”...BUT I do not intend to take part in any of it.
The behaviors in evidence worldwide today have been accurately predicted for MANY years…by saints..! I STAND WITH GOD…It’s a world of permissiveness and and “new freedoms”...
So..Do as you please..Buy now…! (pay later)

Mark,

You missed the best story of them all ... stopping prayers at council meetings. I’ve just heard that the National Secular Society here in the UK were successful in their action against one council.  See http://www.secularism.org.uk/stop-council-prayers.html

I find it odd that they never considered it an opportunity to share their ‘thoughts’ with councillors during prayer time. No - the NSS had to ‘stop’ prayer time.

I suggest the NSS try to change the date since it infers Jesus may have actually existed, remove the cross from hospitals and pharmacies, the red cross from England’s flag (and other crosses from the Union Flag) and change the name of Dunblane because it means something to do with St Blane (but that’s in Scotland, not England), etc, etc, etc, etc.

Liz and Nick,

With all due respect, theology and “following Jesus Christ” are mere abstractions if HMG rules out the possibility of a transcendent Creator who speaks to us in objective, propositional terms.  And arresting a man for saying nothing that the apostles and prophets haven’t said assumes as much.  The man articulated nothing more than the historic Christian position on an issue that has achieved political privelege.  What will your argument be if the government criminalizes viewpoints that you agree with?

What happened to the Nation that stood up to fascism?  Did it stare into the abyss a little too long?

Mark, you are so sweet but just can’t be from New York.  “Schlep” means to carry.  I think you meant “schlub” which is a sort of dull couch potato but a sweet one.  Try the word “mensch”, a caring human.

I just wonder if the Pope will also be arrested if he happens to slip with a comment on the sanctity of marriage between men and women.

The Britles should gather up all the Bibles and have a jolly good burning!  Why not?  That’s what their gag laws do anyway.  Henry VIII lives!

Mark,
Further to my earlier post - more news on the NSS attmept to ban prayers from council meetings.

I’m not here to defend every action coming out of the British goverment.  I still must point something out.  There’s still that icky, sticky issue of the BNP’s aggressive promotion of apartheid.  There’s still that icky, sticky issue of neo-nazi hooligans—hooliganism is an all-too-real phenomenon) stalking the streets.  In the cases that you cited, we can give the police a benefit of a doubt and say that they overreacted and jumped to conclusions.

Do with my comment what you will.

Precisely.  Which leaves us Brits with just one option: Emulate our glorious ancestors, the martyrs of England and Wales.  Screw the law and take the consequences.

Are you ready?
to pay ultimate price that each of the Apostles paid for our faith?

Their lives are poignant reminders of the tremendous price thatthese great Martyrs paid to follow Jesus Christ and establish the “good news” for us thru the ages.

Emulate our glorious ancestors!

THE PRICE PAID, BYTHE APOSTLES, FOR OUR FAITH
Matthew
Suffered martyrdom in Ethiopia, was killed by a sword wound.

Mark
Died in Alexandria, Egypt, after being dragged by horses through the streets until he was dead.

Luke
Was hanged in Greece as a result of his tremendous preaching to the lost.

John
Faced martyrdom when he was boiled in huge basin of boiling oil during a wave of persecution in Rome.  However, he was miraculously delivered from death.  John
was then sentenced to the mines on the prison island of Patmos.  He wrote his prophetic Book of Revelation on Patmos.  The apostle John was later freed and returned to serve as Bishop of Edessa in modern Turkey.  He died as an old man, the only apostle to die peacefully.

Peter
He was crucified upside down on an x-shaped cross.  According to church tradition it was because he told his tormentors that he felt unworthy to die in the same way Jesus Christ had died.

James
Just The leader of the church in Jerusalem, was thrown over a hundred feet down from the southeast pinnacle of the Temple when he refused to deny his faith in Christ.  When they discovered that he survived the fall, his enemies beat James to death with a fuller’s club. ?*This was the same pinnacle where Satan had taken Jesus during the Temptation.

James the Great
Son of Zebedee, was a fisherman by trade when Jesus called him to a lifetime of ministry.  As a strong leader ?of the church, James was ultimately beheaded at Jerusalem.  The Roman officer who guarded James watched amazed as James defended his faith at his trial.  Later, the officer walked beside James to the place of execution.  Overcome by conviction, he declared his new faith to the judge and knelt beside James to accept beheading as a Christian.

Bartholomew
Also known as Nathaniel Was a missionary to Asia.  He witnessed for our Lord in present day Turkey.  Bartholomew was martyred for his preaching in Armenia where he was flayed to death by a whip.

Andrew
Was crucified on an x-shaped cross in Patras, Greece.  After being whipped severely by seven soldiers they tied his body to the cross with cords to prolong his agony.
His followers reported that, when he was led toward the cross, Andrew saluted it in these words: ‘I have long desired and expected this happy hour.  The cross has been consecrated by the body of Christ hanging on it.’  He continued to preach to his tormentors for two days until he expired.

Thomas
Was stabbed with a spear in India during one of his missionary trips to establish the church in the sub-continent.

Jude
Was killed with arrows when he refused to deny his faith in Christ.

Matthias
The apostle chosen to replace the traitor Judas Iscariot, was stoned and then beheaded.

Paul
Was tortured and then beheaded by the evil Emperor Nero at Rome in A.D. 67.  Paul endured a lengthy imprisonment,  which allowed him to write his many epistles to the churches he had formed throughout the Roman Empire. These letters, which taught many of the foundational doctrines of Christianity, form a large portion of the New Testament.

The last time I checked, the British government showed no intention of killing Christians.

Ian Maxfield. I would much prefer if you spent your time working on your next Catholic Laboratory podcast than commenting on this post. (Waiting patiently for #37)

All have freedom in the West except the christians and mostly for catholics The governmental machinery is working to create a godless atmosphere everywhere.Conscience has no value You have no freedom to uphold your faith.  If a christian says that homosectual acts are sin, govt. can say that it is no sin because it is lawful. This is the view of most of the Muslims, Jews and Hindus. Does the Govt. want to abolish religion ? It is wishful thinking only

Ashwin I…Yeppers..of course that is what Gov’t. wants. What do they know about virtue..? Nothing ! All any Gov’t today wants is plenty of sin…Sin is where the profit is, and as long as the people buy it and vote for it, we are ALL caught in the trap. Don’t be surprised at anything, now..!

Ashwin, aren’t there vocal public Christians on television (i.e. CBN and Fox) and on the ‘net and in bookstores?  To insist that Christians have no freedom at all is, frankly, nonsensical in light of empirical evidence.

In defense of Ashwin..you..oh nameless one..claim to have have much of that great “empirical evidence”, It seems to me, but you could use a little common sense..and that would help you put some facts together..successfully..!

The last time I checked, the British government showed no intention of killing Christians.

In January 1933 Hitler had no intention of killing the Jews.
At least, that’s what the Germans thought.

Excuse me, Geoffrey, but European liberals are staunchly anti-Nazi and they do see how destructive the Soviet Union was too.

I’m out of here, at least out of this thread.

“Excuse me, Geoffrey, but European liberals are staunchly anti-Nazi and they do see how destructive the Soviet Union was too.”  -  Brian

Excuse me, Brian, but European liberals are also staunchly anti-Catholic, and it’s anybody’s guess who they hate the most - the Catholic Church or the Nazis or the Bolsheviks.
