Catholic law professor Doug Kmiec, the pro-Obama Catholic who was overlooked for the appointment as the new U.S. ambassador to the Holy See, has been named ambassador to Malta as a consolation prize.

Kmiec’s chances of securing the Holy See ambassadorship were discounted by most Vatican analysts because of Kmiec’s public claims that President Barack Obama isn’t really pro-abortion, despite Obama’s overwhelmingly pro-abortion political record. Kmiec’s arguments were denounced by many prominent U.S. Catholic leaders during last fall’s election campaign.
