VIDEO: Unborn babies struggle in womb!

Saturday, December 01, 2012 4:00 PM Comments (11)

Jacob and Esau struggled in the womb. Now new video shows what this looked like.

According to Genesis, Jacob and Esau struggled with each other while they were still in the womb.

Apparently, it was quite a struggle!

Many women pregnant with twins have experienced the same thing, but now we have motion video of unborn children doing just this.

Here's the story . . . and the video.

Jacob and Esau

First, here's the biblical story of Jacob and Esau:

Genesis 25

21 Isaac prayed to the Lord on behalf of his wife, because she was childless. The Lord answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant.

22 The babies jostled each other within her, and she said, “Why is this happening to me?” So she went to inquire of the Lord.

23 The Lord said to her,

“Two nations are in your womb,
    and two peoples from within you will be separated;
one people will be stronger than the other,
and the older will serve the younger.”

24 When the time came for her to give birth, there were twin boys in her womb (NIV).

Other translations render Rebekah's question a bit differently, and in ways that bring out the intensity of the struggle:

But the children jostled each other in the womb so much that she exclaimed, “If it is like this, why go on living!” (NAB:RE).

The children struggled together within her; and she said, "If it is thus, why do I live?" (RSV).

Why Do They Do This?

The particularly intense struggle between Jacob and Esau may have had prophetic overtones, as Rebekah learned upon consulting the Lord, but this is not a phenomenon unique to them.

Lots of twins appear to struggle in the womb.

Why?

No doubt, they do it partly for the same reason that babies kick and punch in the womb, in general: To exercise their limbs.

This is actually very important to childhood development.

The joints need to be exercised in order to get the muscles to develop properly and to get the bones to develop properly.

Without all the kicking and punching, as distracting as it can be, the babies' bones might grow in ways that would cause their joints to lock up. They need to keep them moving to prevent this from happening.

If there are twins in a womb, at some point in their development they presumably reach a stage in which they don't particularly like being kicked or punched, and they may reflexively strike back at the source of annoyance, giving rise to even more vigorous activity in the womb.

Quickening

Even in cases where there is only one baby, though, a good amount of kicking and punching is inevitable--and historically it played an important role in determining whether a woman was pregnant.

Although missing a monthly cycle could be an indication of pregnancy, it was not a sure sign, as not all women have regular cycles--something that would have been even more the case in a world with dodgy nutrition and medical care.

Without modern pregnancy tests, the point at which pregnancy was certain was the point at which the baby became strong enough that the mother could feel it kicking.

Actually, it had been doing this for even longer, but it was not strong enough to make its motions felt.

The point at which this happened became known as the "quickening," because it was now certain that there was a new life in the mother. ("Quick" meant "alive," as in "the quick and the dead"--the living and the dead).

And now, through the marvels of modern technology, we can see into the womb and observe what the children are doing!

Behold!

I have fraternal twins, and while I was pregnant, Baby A always had the most room to the point that B was tucked in so tight we struggled to get her heartbeat or even palpate where her head and tush were, every visit.  The funny thing is, now at 20 months old, A is still the dominant personality.

Catholic democrats need to take a good look at these photos. After all, they just voted a second time for a candidate who believes girls and boys can be legally killed outside of the womb even after they survive the attempt to kill them in their mom’s womb. Perhaps these voters were seeing big $ signs in front of their eyes when they entered the voting booth. Those dollars seem to be going less farther every day. This is the result of the Catholic democrats’ “social justice” economic policies, which have resulted in higher unemployment and poverty and lower wages and wealth. These “compassionate” policies have had brutal results, but not as brutal as to what happens to these girls and boys in or out of the womb.

Where’s the video?  All I see is a rectangular black box.

Jess: The video is lower down. If all you’re seeing is a black box, it may have a compatibility issue with your browser. :-/

no video!

I’m using Google Chrome, and the video shows up fine.  Only the smaller of the two is obviously wrasslin, though; the larger one appears to be chewing tobacco.

Chewing Tobacco! What a visual that brings to mind! Thanks for letting me in on the action…

The people -faithful Catholics- fighting socialism (communism, collectivism, redistributism, egalitarianism) do more for the poor than most since they fight against the biggest producer of poverty the world has ever known.  And we also fight for people all the other people too, since under these types of societies everyone is targeted for the impoverishment it brings.

Oh, I feel so bad for poor little squishy in the corner!  The other one is lording over him!  It’s head looks so uncomfortable!  I reeaallly feel for that mother.  Look at that movement!  I thought having one in there at a time felt like a battle!

Seriously, though, how evil do you have to be to approve of abortion?  They look like a couple of my kids, sitting behind a sheet making a fort.  ;)

Keith Kooster:

Be careful not to conflate American nationalism with Catholic teaching. Though Communism has seen it’s dark days, by no means take for granted that Capitalism is a shining beacon of hope backed by the Magisterium. You may do well to look at what Chesterton had to say.

Amazing how God can see babies in the womb since the begining of human women having babies. The very sight we are able to see with technology he has been able to see since the begining. (And that was a loooong time ago! Haha!) He even knows all the hairs we have on our heads. Its quite outstanding how powerful and amazing he is. He even says he knows all the deep sea creatures at the bottom on the ocean. (Well he DID make them after all.) We humans do not know this since there are still many to be discovered and the pressure at the bottom of the ocean is so intense we need to build more advanced technology to go to the very very very bottom to see whats down there.
