I am so disappointed.

As much as I dislike The View (and I could never have a television on at that time in my house anyway) I have always found consolation in the show’s inclusion of Elisabeth Hasselbeck as one of its hosts. That was because I had confidence in Hasslebeck’s opposition to legal abortion and support of traditional marriage.

That was silly of me.

It turns out that Hasselbeck actually supports both gay marriage and legal abortion.

Interviewer: What are some common misperceptions about you?

Hasselbeck: Oh, gosh, there are so many….  [Also] I am not ultra-ultra-conservative on every issue. I actually support gay marriage.

Interviewer: That may be an opinion that would surprise people.

Hasselbeck: I think the gay marriage thing would definitely surprise people…. I am a person that does believe that life begins at conception, but I also don’t believe that the government should tell women what to do with their bodies. So I’m torn there in terms of supporting laws [for or against abortion]. I always say I would rather change a heart than a law. I think it has to start there. Always trying to mandate, mandate, mandate this or that is not the way that I believe this country should run.

This is nothing new, of course. I feel like I could be reading the words of any number of “personally opposed, but” politicians on the topic of legalized abortion.

I think pro-life activist Jill Stanek put it well when she repsonded:

“I’m glad Hasselbeck agrees with basic science – Biology 101 – that life begins at conception. Thus, aborting that life is nothing other than murder. Does Hasselbeck agree that 2-yr-olds are living humans – but she doesn’t want to interfere with another’s right to kill them? This is no different. Too bad.”

And at Creative Minority Report, Matt Archbold observed:

“I can’t stand when people say that when it comes to abortion they’d rather change a heart than the law. I always wonder, can’t we do both?”

Yes, indeed, we can do both. It’s just that The View can’t do both. I am beginning to think that the show is aptly named, as only One View is shared by its hosts. Though I once thought the show’s producers kept a “token conservative” on board with Elisabeth Hasselbeck, it appears that is not the case at all. Even she is publicly falling in line with The View—the one “acceptable” view of pro-choice and pro-gay marriage.

For a refreshing alternative, we can take a look at Rachel Campos Duffy’s (mother of six!) appearance on The View last year, in which she reminded us of Mother Teresa’s warning that we would never have world peace until we ended abortion.

Now here’s a Different View. A courageous and correct one, too.
