Sarah Palin Makes a Statement. Again.

Friday, January 15, 2010 11:00 AM Comments (32)

Well, this is bound to stick in someone’s craw. Pretty much everything Sarah Palin does seems to, so it might as well be a bold pro-life statement that gets her into trouble this time.

She and daughter Bristol are featured on the cover of the latest issue of In Touch Weekly which hits news stands today. I like the simplicity of the mother-daughter message:

“We’re Glad We Chose Life.”

I don’t often look for much cross-over content between magazines that specialize in celebrity gossip and Faith & Family, but this happens to be a cover even a Catholic family magazine would be proud to print. Here we have two pretty moms with their smiling cutie-pie babies, proudly declaring their joy at having chosen to give these children life, despite their challenging circumstances.

“Though raising an infant has been challenging, Bristol has the unconditional love and support of her family — especially her mother, Sarah Palin. After all, no one can better understand the complicated decision to have a baby under difficult circumstances. Just a year earlier, at the age of 44, Sarah carried her son Trig to term, even though she was told during a sonogram that he would be born with Down syndrome. Now, the mother and daughter are sharing a unique experience— raising baby boys together under the same roof.”

However you feel about Sarah Palin’s politics or personal life, pro-life Catholics have to appreciate the positive, life-affirming message she and her daughter send in this interview.

There is, after all, no shortage of those who do not appreciate such a pro-life message. Who will in fact sneer at it. And roll their eyes.

When it comes to life issues, Sarah Palin certainly seems to annoy all the right people.

I like that in a mom.

God Bless Sarah, Todd, Track, Bristol, Willow, Piper, Trig, and Tripp in the name of our Savior and Lord Jesus Christ of Nazareth.
Blessings, Irma

I changed from being Pro-Abortion to Pro-Life because of Sarah Palin.  God bless her.

Finally, someone in the political arena who is willing to take on big government on life issues.  If there were more like her,  we would turn our country around .

Since when is “choosing” not to kill your child something to brag about?

The reason I love this woman is her stand for life. She is not ashame to show what a beautiful gift this baby is. Most people would have aborted it. Childern are a gift from God no matter what or how it was conceived. To reject life is to reject God.

The National Catholic Register should be concerned about the exploitation of two young children which is a violation of ethical principles. Reportedly $100,000 or more was paid to the Palins for their interview with In Touch. These ladies are depriving the young children of their right to privacy for personal gain. Children are human beings whose right to privacy should be respected.  The photos of Tripp taking a bath could possibly embarrass him in later years. He can not and has not given consent for the photos. Probably his father, Levi Johnston, has not given consent either. I perceive ethical violations and probably illegalities.Catholic media should not support people who exploit their kids. It is becoming common for parents to abuse children by coercing them to participate g them in reality shows and/or parading them excessively for political gain. However common, these practices violate the human right to privacy of the child and are unethical.

Is Keith Olbermann posting here under the name ‘Carmen’?

Carmen, Its pretty sad that you are so worried about this woman getting paid for a photo of her infant son. She has probably done more to support pro life issues than any public figure in the last 5-10yrs. Yet your worried that the clueless, father of the year candidate Levi did not consent to these pictures. Brilliant

Good job “In Touch” for featuring an article like this.  It is good to know that your “pop culture base” readers will have the opportunity of learning the pro “life” positive message.

Does “Carmen” think all the wonderful family pictures we saw of Obama’s family after the election, including his children, violate their privacy? The Palin’s are public figures, by their choice, and want to be leaders of our country. It is important that we know Sarah Palin’s values, and this magazine cover states it perfectly.
I am so proud of her and her daughter.

Every mother chooses life.  If not, there is no child.  Some women face severe challenges when it comes to making that choice—Sarah Palin had a supportive husband and extended family, and financial security.  Her daughter also has a supportive family, financial security, and built-in babysitting.  They both have health insurance for themselves and for their children and none of us worry about the future of their children. If we really care about unborn children, we must care about the conditions in which ALL children will live and grow and thrive—they ALL need support, emotional and financial, they ALL need affordable health care, food and clothing. And we ALL have to help provide those things if we really care about ALL life.  That means we ALL must pay a share of taxes so that government programs are available to promote life.

@kate,
you must be referring to the obamahealthcare that the democrats are trying to shove down our throat.  Well for your information every child already has health care whether the family can afford it or not.  No child has ever gone without getting medical help in this country.  Neither has any illegal person that goes to the emergency room.  As for me I choose NOT to accept obamahealthcare.  If it passes you and I will be paying MORE $$ for LESS care.  Talk about rationed care and NO care at all if you cannot contribute to society.  Have you heard of the scale they will be using.  Yes, it is in there, Sarah Palin is 100% correct when it comes to the “Death Panel”  If you or your child get in a horrific accident and have very little chance of survival currently you would still get the BEST medical care and Drs. would do everything possible to help keep you and your child alive.  With obamacare if the paramedic thinks you have no chance of survival, then he/she may withhold medical care so as to NOT spend too much money on someone that may die anyway, or will NOT be able contribute to society.  If you become pregnant with a child that may be disabled or with a disease then the government will NOT give your child care if you choose to keep it.  We all already give money for the government to care for children, elderly, disabled and yes even illegals. Even those in JAIL get medical care.  So if you were referring to obamacare, you had better look at the facts before you end up with little or NO medical care.
If your weren’t then please forgive me, because to me it sure did read in that manner.

@Carmen, learn the rules on children/minors before you post such nonsense.

Oh, good grief.  If she didn’t have photos of her kids, they’d say she was hiding them in closets and neglecting them.  Read the old fable—try to please all and you will please none.  I can almost guarantee that there are women of all ages across America who have been inspired or encouraged to choose life (or even just choose to celebrate with even more joy, their new babies) by this article.  I know I am.  I have a daughter with a serious genetic disorder, and Sarah’s witness has done so much to encourage me.  I don’t think we need more government programs.  We need more Catholics practicing our faith and reaching out to each other.  Whatever happened to Catholic hospitals?  I am sure St. Frances Cabrini is crying tears from heaven over what we have done to health care. Also, the next time a baby or kid starts a “disturbance” in Church, tell their parents how glad you are they brought the children.

Sarah and Bristol Palin show remarkable courage by publicly, and unapologetically, showing the world the sublime reality of life.  To take this message into the popular culture media is a bold stroke of genious by the Palins.  They are using the tools of the adversary to carry the message of God.  We need more bold Christians like these women.

Yes, it is a lovely picture of two brave women that gave birth to their children despite terrible odds.  It would have been even more effective, if they been modestly dressed!

The post by Carmen is ridiculous. The media (beyond Catholic newspapers) needs to highlight positive pro-life messages more often. The Palins are doing a wonderful service in our society, and deserve praise for putting themselves out there knowing they will be ridiculed.

One criticism of this article however:
The statement, “However you feel about Sarah Palin’s politics or personal life. . .”

It is difficult for me to imagine any Catholic having a problem with either. She stands for personal responsibility, she is pro-life and has a record of quashing corruption. She walks the talk! We should all look at her as a model for Christianity. She may have her “flaws” but we are all imperfect in this life.

To respond to Tom Hoefling’s post of Jan 15th, not killing your child has been something to “brag about,” especially when they are born in “difficult circumstances” since Roe v. Wade. Today, many so-called doctors would counsel for abortion in both of their circumstances.  Sadly, in today’s world, their choice for life is not ordinary, but heroic.

Carmen you must read the message of the homage of the Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI to the Immaculate Conception in Piazza di Spagna in Rome last December…. http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/benedict_xvi/speeches/2009/december/documents/hf_ben-xvi_spe_20091208_immacolata_en.html, if you can’t at least a review of it… http://www.zenit.org/article-27788?l=english.

@Rosina, your statement “Yes, it is a lovely picture of two brave women that gave birth to their children despite terrible odds.  It would have been even more effective, if they been modestly dressed!”
______

I guess you would prefer for them to be dressed in a dress/jumper below the knee or maybe down to the ankles and a turtle neck blouse with their hair in braids and a bonnet.
GET with the program, it’s NOT about the clothes IT’S their actions, Sarah and Bristol are Walking the Walking NOT just Talking the Talk.
Unlike Obama well dressed yet his actions speak louder that words, he Voted to KILL the baby that was born during a botched abortion, instead of giving the baby medical attention.  Read and learn the Truth, for the Truth shall set you free.

I just finished Sarah’s book.  I behind her 100%.  She represents the moral, down to earth values of middle America.

Life is a blessing, and in this immoral age, anyone who chooses life under the Palin’s circumstances is heroic and newsworthy. May God bless them and God bless this nation.

wow. of all the things sarah has said or done, I think this is the best. what a witness for life to an audience that really needs it.

I’m a fan of Sarah Palin because of her pro-life views and her down-to-earth experience as a woman and mom. So many people trash her (I see these bad remarks constantly on the media boards) and I never get that. Yes, she might not be perfect but she respects life and motherhood and children. We desperately need that in this country. :)

@kate

Why do I feel offended by your minimizing the struggle the Palin women had to go through in making their decisions, especially in light of the fact the whole world is going to know about it?  Friends and enemies alike.  There were hundreds of thousands of people looking down their noses at them, judging them, and ridiculing them not only at the water coolers and Starbucks but in newspapers and magazines’ letters to the editor as well as columnist alike.  That doesn’t even take into account the glee in the main stream media newsrooms that can flash the most unflattering photos of them and stories into tens of millions of peoples homes.  Nor does it take into account the pain the extended family and friends had to experience hearing, reading and seeing such hurtful and hateful attacks tumbling down on two women who made good decisions in spite of what would happen to them.  Their babies were all they were concerned about.  And don’t forget the hurt such people’s comments would have on the tens of thousands of women who have already made the same lonely decision The Palin women just did.  These are all true American women who soldered on - and choice life.

And please forgive me, but as for your snide insinuation that those of us who care for the unborn don’t follow that up after they are born with help to those in need, take your self indulgent halo off and you might see how stupid and insulting your unconfirmed, unsubstantiated accusatory, un-Christian political rhetoric sounds.  The only self-proclaimed “pro-life” people that talk like that are those who find no problem giving their name identification and votes to the pro-abortion party in this country that is solely responsible for abortion-on-demand remaining the law of the land.  And sadly too many church-going, Profession of Faith professing, Lord’s Prayer praying, Communion receiving Catholics are responsible for that political party still having power to deny human babies their right to life.  The next time such Catholics recite their Professing of Faith, they may want to remain silent during the part where they say, “we believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life; and in the Lord’s Prayer, when they pray for God’s “will be done on earth…and deliver us from evil.”

I saw this cover at the grocery store yesterday, and it made me happy.  That little Trig is adorable. I am no fan of Sarah Palin as a political figure, but I do admire her pro-life stance.  I just wish she hadn’t schlepped her baby to all those book signings and public appearances in the height of flu season.  That made me nervous for him.

@stillbelieve, Wow!  Your comment to Kate hit the bull’s eye.
This beautiful cover is a reminder to some post-abortive women of the horrible choice they made to choose death.  Let us ALL celebrate the courage women manifest when they choose life!  And pray for those who make excuses to stay in the darkness of death.

In the world we live in, these two women are a shining example of what all women should stand for, life!!  Carmen has the idea that privacy is more important, however we need good upstanding Christians who take a stand against the culture of death that pervades our society.  Sarah is the perfect example of a great mother, who keeps her children within reach inspite of her political career.

Abortion is an excuse for committing murder to serve one’s selfish desires.
The life within you is not your own and it’s certainly not property. Life is a life when you know it exists, to indiscriminately end it is clearly murder.
Such life is not property, it is a responsibility. Rational and responsible adults deal with life issues they don’t “execute” them. Always side with life, it’s the morally right thing to do, it’s the human thing to do. Statements need to be made - Truth cuts through Godlessness (Liberalism) like a hot knife through butter - God bless Sarah Palin!

I cried yesterday when I saw that lovely girl at the Pro-Life rally, in Washington DC, who had Down’s Syndrome, and she is so beautiful, and then they told her story, and the narrator said that 90% of babies with a Down’s diagnosis are killed in the womb… I saw this cover the other day at the supermarket, right there out at every register, both babies so pretty! Both moms with such beautiful smiles! And I was SO happy to see that picture! Because if it saves one little boy like Trig, or one little girl like Maddy, or one boy like my son (and I’m a single mom like Bristol too, so I know how hard it is!), well, then it’s worth it. God bless them all - and God bless all mom’s out there, all families. Grant them love, and laughter, and all that they need to bring their children up in the light of Your holy Love, O Lord, together we pray! Amen!

I don’t understand how they are not modestly dressed.  Both have on slacks, their breasts aren’t exposed, I can’t see what the problem is.  Do you think their clothes are too tight? Like, really, what?  I can’t see how on earth that’s an imodest picture.

I agree with Mary, that’s not an immodest cover, not by a long shot.
